euro cars also have the red light/reflector under the rear plate. US cars dont need this and so it is missing |

^ do you notice the two cars have different exhaust pipes.
First one looks nice...second one looks like cosmetic fakes. |

The height of the hood in these spy photos worries me. With a low center of gravity and flat four engine there's no reason for that hood to be up so high and making the whole car look chunky

European pedestrian safety laws require high hoods. Though if you ask me, a sack of meat getting hit by a car at 45+ mph is going to be a smear regardless of how high the hood is.

I never understood how a higher hood is safer...Doesn't it mean the car hits you at a point closer to your center of gravity and the initial impact is worse since there's greater moment of inertia?
I'd think if you roll onto the windshield instead that would be better than flying from the impact. I don't know why you need 3 inches between stuff under the hood and the top of the hood, does the metal really deform that much from a head smashing into it?

And no Sheet steel won't keep from deforming at those speeds, but imagine if the hood was cheap grade aluminum *shudder* .

At say, 35mph I think the pedestrian being hit has pretty much no chance. So let's consider lower speeds, we want to reduce injury. Is the hood really going to bend in that much? Last time I messed with the hood on my mom's car, that thing was really sturdy... If the nose is lower, then the pedestrian has a better chance of being lifted onto the car. The smaller area at the nose is okay, because being further from the CoG means the moment of inertia about the impact point is lower (eh I think I got some terms wrong), so they're more likely to go onto the hood. Am I missing something here? Last time I checked though, if you're hit at even 20 mph, you're kinda screwed, I don't really see the point in this.

it's just another piece of legislation that was based either on a sensationalist news story or a faulty scientific study that didn't get the appropriate followup studies and whatnot. Kinda like how they tried to ban alcohol to curb violence and crime, only to discover that crime actually increased when alcohol was made illegal.
Public advocacy groups do this kind of garbage all the time. They get some "for the greater good" concept in their head based on a piece of information that feeds into their confirmation bias, recruit more people using this one piece of info while conveniently ignoring all the other mounds of information that tells them they're wrong, and eventually get some kind of legal policy enacted. For example, you can look at states that require pregnant women to view a sonogram before getting an abortion. There's little if any evidence that women who want abortions actually change their minds after viewing the sonogram.

I disagree that this car's hood is high to meet the Pedestrian law. It can have a lower hood than most cars, b/c as I mentioned previous it has a flat four engine with a significantly lower profile than an inline 4.
Regarding the reasoning for the law itself a lot of you guys aren't looking at it the right way. If a pedestrian is hit and falls on the hood the hood doesn't give much. The reason being that directly under the hood (with minimal clearance) is the engine. And that engine is very hard and won't deform at all. The pedestrian law requires that there be a minimum clearance between the top of the engine and the underside of the hood. That way, when someone falls on the hood there are 1-2 inches (i have no idea what the actual requirement is) of space for the hood to flex and deform, and in the process absorb kinetic energy and slow down the collision. This is why mid engine cars rule. They don't have to compromise their styling for something stupid like this.
