If you love cars, Singapore is definitely not the place to be, unless u're rich.

Basically the government's trying to control the number of cars on the road. Their so called "solution" is to to make car buyers buy Certificate Of Entitlement (COE). COE for a 2.0 litre car now costs about S$65k. So COE + a typical 2.0 litre Honda Civic today costs about S$135k.

That's not the end of the sad news. This COE is only valid for 10years. So if u want to keep the car for another 10 years, u got to buy another COE again.

..as to where this COE $$ go to, I think u can make a good guess

was at the gas station this morning & noticed an Evo Singapore magazine. On it's cover was a picture of the GT86 & above it was a print that captured my attention. It says sumthin like this " Rear Wheel Drive Thrill That Won't Break Your Bank".

Oh Come on guys. Given I AM an Aussie and living in Singapore I have the best perspective.

Granted Australia has cheaper housing (although Singapore has well priced HDB)....the interest rate for mortgages is over 7%!.....and only about 1-1.5% in Singapore. Do the maths.

Cars are definitely more expensive here in Singapore....but 10 year financing at nominal interest rates make monthly payments LESS than Australia.....not to mention PARF and COE rebates for early scrapping.

Oh....and then there's the BIG issue with working in Australia.....TAX! (if anyone in Singapore wants to pay 30-50% of their income to tax then be my guest).

It's all about taking the good with the bad.

Which one of the trio you are most likely to buy: GT-86, BRZ or Hyundai's Veloster?

Individual-wise, I am sorely tempted by the Veloster. Despite it only making 136hp, the 1.6-liter all-aluminum mill is good enough for me, at least in Singapore.

Apparently, Americans are snapping up 1.6L Velosters like hot cakes - Hyundai USA sold 10,000 Velos during the model's first full year on sale.

Meanwhile, Autocar UK gives 4.5 stars (out of a possible 5) to the 1.6 GDi as tested here: http://www.autocar.co.uk/CarReviews/....6-GDi/260998/

Thanks Ren. Personally it was an easy choice. After having a Renault R26 in Australia I'm done with front wheel drive (the Veloster would have taken a back seat to a Megane R250 anyway), but this time I wanted a RWD machine......loved my S15 all those years ago!

The Megane R26 is a leftist choice by local standards. In any case, you have made a right choice by going with the GT-86. Enjoy the drive!

not just that dude. in addition to COE, our import taxes and duties come to around 130% of the car's value.

Taking on a 10year finance scheme might give you lower repayment rates BUT after 10years what happens to the car you've been paying for? You have to pay another tens of thousands just to keep your car another 10 years or deregister it.

like you said, good and bad. For car guys in SG, it's mostly bad.
