For Formula 1, I don't think going to iron brakes is necessary. Carbon ceramic brakes is only a tiny fraction of the cost of the car, the voodoo crap they put in the engine and all the aero is what costs all the money.
I was thinking steel brakes (and maybe aluminum suspension components) to potentially increase the braking zones & for more reliability. Not sure it would really help.

Now that you mention it, I wonder what would the ultimate engine cost-cutting meausre would be? No pneumatic valves, & ERS?

I have enjoyed following Formula 1 this year. I hate the new cars, (miss 18,000 rpm) but love the way the pot has been stirred up.

How about Williams and Teri Bottas, 14th to 2nd. And he did that twice in one race a few weeks back. I'm happy to see Williams getting it on again. Been to long.

I don't think the new V-6's use pneumatic valve systems. I could be wrong though.

I would be surprised if they stopped using a pneumatic valve train since they've perfected it over the course of 2 decades or more.

edit: On brakes, I remember Matchett talking about how the carbon brake rotors took upwards of 4 months to "grow" as they are created layer by layer by layer. 4 months to produce, one weekend to destroy. Talk about burning through cash to save a couple pounds.. ugh.

This shows normal overhead cams being used.

[ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1ihblshF_hQ"]F1 2014 - Ferrari - 3D launch of the new Ferrari V6 powerunit - YouTube[/ame]

When I reseached pneumatic valvetrains, I did see that some still used the cams to open the valves but used pneumatics to close the valves, basically "air springs".

I saw others that used solenoids and no cams.

I have a feeling the FIA would ban solenoids b/c they could be alterted for VVT (same with variable intake trumpets). Yet, I'm sure Renault would get a pass considering the current situation. :p

I know CART/Indycar always used traditional cams, buckets, shims & springs to keep costs down. And those turbo V8s were rocking close to 15,000rpm when Toyota & Cosworth were still in the series.

It's not solenoids, it's just cams with pneumatic springs. The better term is pneumatic spring, not pneumatic valvetrain.

A solenoid driven valve train that can regenerate the energy from the valve returning effectively is the holy grail of engine design.

You just described the "rapture" for all I'm concerned. I think Google will be driving us around in soul-sucking electric bland boxes without steering wheels before we see that miracle of Jesus.

But yes, the camshafts are mandated in the F1 rules and that is another thing I think is stupid. Why? Because of Koenigggseggesggs. If F1 would have been allowed to run/develop a solenoid based valve train (or solenoid based ERS valvetrain) a decade ago, that tech would most likely be in cars today. Instead we get Koenigggseggs developing it one their own which means it won't be in an entry level Toyota, well... ever.

Fuck you F1...

This guy too (technically, at least. I don't think they've actually mailed them out yet)!

Now I just need a plane ticket and hotel.

For those going, what are you doing for transportation and lodging? I know parking is extremely expensive on track so it's not even worth it to rent a car.

I have an old friend from High School who lives within walking distance from COTM so I traded him a 3-day pass for a place to stay. One hell of a reunion if you ask me lol

Hamilton exploded a RF rotor yesterday in qualifying and ended up in the tire wall, started 16 with a 4 spot penalty for gear change so started 20th.

Things are heating up in the background as well as the big chief at Ferrari is not happy with King Bernie and the 'taxi driver' show F1 has become this year with the fuel saving program. This might get good.....

Several drivers also showing displeasure with the fuel savings deal and a couple of the radio transmissions during the race were pretty heated with their engineers. One driver said do you want me to pass or save gas? Another was warned twice about coasting more to save gas.

Steve Matchett (TV commentator) just doesn't understand why they're trying to save gas while racing............

Daniel Riccardo impressive today with passing skills

Hamilton finishes 3rd with an impressive run of his own

Rossburg 1st, Botas 2nd, Hamilton 3rd
