the best thing to do? be consistent. my brothers dog is trained that when we sit down at the table to eat dinner, he goes to his crate, or his brown blanket off the side, and isn't allowed to leave that spot until we get up. it's just like kids. they will always test the boundaries. be consistent about where they are, and they'll get it. at least most of the time.

If the pup likes you and has sort of bonded with you, throw a set of your smelliest clothes in the crate. When you get him in it - TREAT. Most puppies are food motivated so that works for quite a while. When they get bigger you'll need to make some changes. Edit: Another couple of thoughts. At that age, you should probably be taking him outside at a minimum, every two hours. Put him down on the grass and when he potties - TREAT! When he starts squalling in the crate, don't let him out until he calms down. When he gets quiet, let him out and - TREAT! Ignore most to all undesirable behaviors for a while and reward the hell out of desirable ones. You are now Sugar Dog Daddy.

Depending on the dog, sometimes it's best to give them a treat whether or not they did it right -

Fortunately the poo part he's only done outside......so far. Also I need to pre break up a bunch of the treats and put them into a sandwich baggie that I can take outside. Only did that the last couple outings tonight. Need to do better. FWIW, tonight I really tired him out. Then took him out, but he didn't do anything. So instead of letting him fall asleep on my lap, I took him into the bedroom with one of the treat bones the breeder gave me and coaxed him into the crate. A few times he started carrying it and trying to leave, but on the last try he stayed inside, laid down, and kept chewing the bone. So I left the door open a bit and sat outside. He kept chewing without paying any attention to me. So I closed the door and locked it gently. Kept watching him, turned out the lights. Kept sitting and watching, put white noise on my Google home, then walked away and left the bedroom door open a crack for some hallway light. So far so good. My breeder said the schedule of feeding/watering she recommends for puppies is to take them away at 8 or 9pm, play a bunch, take the puppy out at 9:45pm, let it go to the bathroom, then take it in and put it to bed. She says at this age for shibas they are safe to stay in bed for 8 hours as long as you take the food/water away early enough. That's what I did last night but think maybe I should've taken him out at around 3-4 hours anyway. Might do that tonight just to be sure... But so far so good at about half an hour since putting him in with the peanut butter bone thingy.

So Haru slept through the night. then this morning he screamed a bit till I took him out at 6am. Then I let him eat/drink, then played, then I put him in his playpen with treats, but of course he's still not used to being locked in, so he kept screaming. Breeder said it's fine, shibas just need to be ignored in the beginning till they're quiet.
I had my sliding window open on my balcony for fresh air and then I hear someone yell from outside "I'm calling animal services!!" So yeah, that's my morning. I hope they're proud of themselves if/when animal services actually show up and they realize he's just a puppy.
