One of the things that always makes me chuckle about the BRZ is the way kids react to it. I've had the Alfa parked in my driveway for the past week and none of them have taken a second look. Today I backed the BRZ out of the garage for the first time this season. The kid of a new neighbor, can't be more than 8, ran outside and shouted "Wow, look at that!" while pointing.
Hopefully inspiring new gear heads. |

Just dropped off the car for the TOB/clutch fork work. Also sneaking in a new oil cooler.
Won’t see the car for a few days.

Haha, same here to be honest. I think I've gone 3-4 days without driving it. It's so crazy.

If anyone wants to help me with my car, need some feedback from the dealer feedback from someone more knowledgeable than me:

Thanks for the reformat, I was on mobile, didn't notice the redirect link. I've tried to maintain a good troubleshooting thread, in case someone else has the same exact problem and is looking for information on what to do in the future. No offense to you or to anyone on this forum, but I have not gotten much feedback on my thread from this ft86 community on what to try (which is fair, maybe it's a new problem and I realize people are busy), so I took it to the dealer, as most of the few replies I got suggested that I do... One post on the "FRS/BRZ EPS Motor Coupler Replacement (Rattle Fix)" thread mentions a dealer only willing to do the repair by replacing the EPS motor -- which my dealer says they can't order without the steering column. So I've gotten mixed feedback on what actually can be replaced individually and what is integrated with the rest of the surrounding parts. I'm sure you can understand a bit of my frustration when the dealer says it'll be $1500+ and a new steering column to replace a part that I can order on E-Bay for $90 and there's a forum post explicitly showing how to remove and open up the EPS motor to fix a rattle. Maybe not many people here work on their own cars or maybe the ones that do don't actively monitor the forums. I'm just hoping to get some help from someone that has a bit more knowledge than me, so I can make an informed decision on whether to get the car back from the dealer and attempt the EPS motor replacement alone, or if I need to pony up the $1500 and get a new steering column. If my faux pas ends up saving me a grand, sorry for clogging up your thread, but I'll be happy that someone saw it and helped me who might not have otherwise, because I am struggling to get any responses or suggestions in my troubleshooting thread.

You could try the $90 solution and if it doesn't work, pay the dealership $1500 to fix it assuming you don't break something else when doing it. I don't know why one dealer would go with that solution vs the whole column. Perhaps the motor on ebay isn't up to OEM spec? Maybe there is a difference between model years and your specific version is different? Lots of reasons are possible. |

Lol. The shop emailed me saying they will add an hour to the work estimate because the TRD fender extensions are peeling off near the bumper where they need to pull it off and don't want to damage them, plus because they thought they'd need to cut my side markers and re-solder them??
I have Valenti side markers but they use the OEM harness and clips. So I told them that. Yikes.

The dealerships can not make repairs with $90 EBay motors. They have a huge liability issue if something went wrong after doing such work. Their manuals call for a full replacement and that is what they have to do. If the $90 motor may work then you will either have to do it yourself and take the gamble or find some shady shop that will not take responsibility and get them to do it.

EPS issues like this are not common and typically require techstream to help diagnose effectively and efficiently since the steering is run by the steering ecu and TC ecu. Even out of the guys that work on their own cars, not many have techstream. That is also why you are seeing no codes on an OBD2 reader.
