dont be macho, spend as much time and take as much instruction before you go try and tear it up, spend enough time in red that you can start in the back, and spin out a bunch know the limits well, this is where you learn the most and folks keep distance

by the time youre in 3, you have to have youre setup dialed, most guys have track day tires and theres nothing stock really, this a is a 9/10s bunch

group4 is all r-comps, and I suggest avoiding this till your ready, its the absolute fastest cars and drivers usually open passing anywhere anything goes this is a 10/10s bunch, accidents can happen and it can be real danger

when I started, I started in red and you should too
I'll throw in my .02 on this, since I started with a SCCA Border Region Auto X (Won Novice class), and then got my feet wet with NASA AZ with a Hyperdrive event in 2009, and have worked way from from HPDE1 up to TT currently and am pursuing my competition license.

HPDE1 (Beginner, Classroom + 1x1 instructor passing only on main straights) is mostly instruction based, you get 3-4 20min sessions on track with an instructor, showing you the lines, braking zones, watching corner worker stations, and various track etiquette, and also matching 20min sessions in the classroom going over similar topics. The pace is fairly slow on track, as a lot of people are new to trackdays and work on being comfortable on a track. A lot of people can easily move out of HPDE1 after their first or second day as long as they are smart and don't make any mistakes.

Here's a video on HPDE1: [ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=khaVasFwt90"]HPDE 1 NASA-AZ Introduction.mp4 - YouTube[/ame]

HPDE2 (Novice, Similar/same to HPDE1 but no instructor required) is the next step. No instructor required here, but would recommend one at least for the first session if you don't have any seat time at the track you are at. Pace is slightly increased depending on what the instructors/group leaders deem the group is capable of.

HPDE3 (Intermediate, passing limited) comes next. Passing is open on the straights, and usually given with a point-by in the corners. Typically passing zones get opened up as the day progresses as long as the group is driving clean. Some people at this point have made the switch to an R-compound or a stickier street tire, others keep their cars simple; it really depends on what your ultimate goal with the car is.

HPDE4 (Advanced, open passing with courtesy) comes in as the last HPDE based group. Passing is open all track, but with courtesy, as these sessions are not timed, and there is no need to try to win and be HPDE4 King. Big mix of cars from Miatas up to some heavily prepped machines. A lot of the drivers are close to making the jump to TT, or have lots of laps under their belt in DE4. Pace is the fastest out of the 4 DE groups, and is similar to TT minus being timed. Even though the pace is very fast, drivers are still pretty smart and aware of their surroundings, and contact RARELY ever happens. I have seen people push their cars past their limits and go off, but as long as you are comfortable with your car, you.ll be fine.

If you want to get real serious, you can make the jump to Time Trial and the UMS Tuning Time Attack Series. Video on those seen here: [ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7ZV7aCIn9tQ"]NASA-AZ TT & TA Video - YouTube[/ame]

If anyone has any more questions, let me know, I'd be happy to point you in the right direction.

Thanks to @jasper for stopping by and saying whats up. Sorry my car was angry and decided to blow out the flex joint on the up pipe, else I would've taken you out for a session.

Nope, that's my roomate Taylor's, he is the one who is the Operations Mangager down at Forced Air Technologies. His is an 09 WRX with the hatch-mounted wing. Makes 370whp on his TT2 map and 560whp on his Time Attack map.

It is about 2 1/2 hours from Mesa, and most of the drive is pretty fun. Taylor is about 45 minutes past Taylor.
20+ runs?

I didn't know the summer events were in Taylor. I had already decided not to attend the summer events to avoid the heat.

Yeah rumor has it there well be another two by the end of the month unless they just ordered the kits here in Phoenix and are taking the cars elsewhere when they are finished. We could be looking at 4 of them here in Phoenix by mid summer.
