What did you settle on for hardness? Did you just quench with vegetable oil?

i worked outside on the garage. i couldn't take looking at the crappy door falling apart any more. it required cutting the new door down, widening the opening, and resupporting the main door header.. so about 6-8 hours of work.. the only fun part was that i got to break out the air nailers.

Yeah I know that feel. Here, you feel like you’re in the oven. Quench oil got up to 120 degree without heating it up... which was nice, so I didn’t have to heat it up, but it showed that it was THAT hot under the sun.

57-58 should hold a nice edge and not be too difficult to sharpen.

Yep, I'd suggest you get right on that, before the fire marshal drives by and gets a look inside of your garage - |

I watched a really nice documentary on the BBC about a Japanese swordmaster family.. it was very sweet, capturing the spiritual nature of sword making.. worth a watch if you can find it...
