Its a sh!itty business practice and it United can go EAD. It will be a cold day in h3ll before I ever fly their POS airline.

Ugm...thanks?

I pretty much said multiple times I think United was wrong in how they handled this.

However, so was the "good" Dr. who somehow thought he should be above everyone else and not be bumped. I'm sure he would have not complained had it been anyone else on the plane. It wasn't some moral stance on his part, it was a selfish childish act that impacted literally hundreds of others for his benefit.

I think he was right to protest. More people should stand up for what is right in modern society. It's a losing proposition usually but sometimes there is an underlying issue that would otherwise never go addressed. In this case the practice of overselling airline seats. I get there are a certain percentage of people who cancel or don't make their flights, but shit charge a cancelation fee or something.

I absolutely agree he has the right to protest, if he had some right being violated but he bought the ticket and it's "clear" in the small print you can get bumped. There were (initially) no rights violated here. The beatdown is another issue, but again the victim is a contributing factor in the result.

If airline seats were treated like concert seats you would be absolutely correct on this. In a concert you buy the seat, and its your choice if you show up, but you've spent your money and you aren't getting it back unless you scalp your ticket or give it to someone else. You can't do either with airline tickets, so you can buy a seat and then just change it (with fees). But when you change your seat and your seat flies empty the airline has a "spoiled product" that can't be sold again.

Overbooking wasn't the issue on this flight anyway. The airline needed the seat to make sure other flights (and passengers) traveled on time. They have the ability to do that.

To me the real solution is they should have done that before the plane was loaded, and they should have also offered whatever it took to get volunteers.

In the end though Doc acted like a spoiled child who didn't get what he wanted in the candy aisle. Not saying he deserved what he got, but he didn't help himself either (well until this went viral and now he'll probably get some stupid compensation for it).

Sorry to hijack (oops bad term here) this thread and so I'll stop now. Really it was just intended to be an observation that there at two sides to every story, and its easy to take the "victim's" side even when it is somewhat self-inflicted.

Oh he'll get a settlement out of court because getting an jury that hasn't heard about this would be near impossible. And sure you could argue he broke a law. I mean technically doing anything against cabin crew instructions is against the law but that doesn't make him in the wrong for standing up for himself. I hope he gets a few million bucks and it sets a precedent that it is cheaper to bribe people off the plane with free tickets and/or upgrades than to try and use force.

That's what they're supposed to do, which is why technically he was in the right (he obviously should have just left since the airline can do whatever they want as you can tell. It's like "legally" fucking with a cop when you get pulled over knowing he can really do whatever the hell he wants to you. Do you really want to take that chance?).
That's what the link I posted was talking about.

Honestly though their stock is down 1.1% that's like a $225 million loss in market cap just today. So the few million bucks they give to make his lawyer go away will be pocket change. Which would make the few free tickets they could have bribed some passenger with or even the cost of chartering a jet for their 4 employees would have been pocket change to even to the settlement let alone the publicity nightmare. It's even worse in China than it was in the U.S. and that's their niche destination.

United isn't even that bad for bumping passengers but letting the guy board and sit in the seat and then try to pull him off was a huge mistake.

Oh! That's from the video of the Lake county Sheriff talking tough to drug dealers. I'm surprised to see it crossing over with getting "united."
