Obviously United (or airport) security handled this pretty poorly and should be chastised as such but I also have to wonder...

1) Why did this guy think he was more important than anyone else on the plane? Everyone else had a reason to get home too including those impacted by the downstream flights where the crew was heading ( and before it is brought up don't care that he is a physician, I doubt his need was more critical than a lot of others).

2) If everyone else thought he should get to stay on, why didn't someone else volunteer to get off?

David Dao is the Dr.'s name. He was convicted of trading Narcotics for sex acts from a male employee in 2004. The Kentucky board of medicine granted his license back in 2015 after he completed his sentence. Now he is a pediatrician in Elizabethtown Kentucky.

Well, he had already boarded and everyone had a seat is one issue.
Another issue is they gave preference to their employees over people who had reserved confirmed seats, in violation of 14 CFR 250.2a.

Not sure I see where in that statute it says the airline cannot give preference to its employees over people with tickets, only that each airline has to have set standards for dealing with the situation where there are no volunteers and that they must keep the denied boarding to the absolute minimum.

Again, not saying United was right in their final actions, but they do have the right to give anyone alternate carriage with appropriate compensation.
