In a tiny town on a road trip and the locals are looking at me like I pulled up in a space ship.

Stopped at a light yesterday and a pontiac g6 pulls up next to me. I notice the driver looking quizzically at the side of my car, then up at me, then back at the car. My girlfriend puts the window down, at which point he does as well and tells him "It's a Scion FR-S". He says "Oh is THAT what that is! I've never seen that before" Then goes on to complement the wheels and tell me it's a nice car and asks if I want to trade. I say I just got it the day before so no. He says he'll throw in two kids and I said definitely not.
An hour later, we get to my girlfriends parents house and a woman is walking by with a chocolate lab. The dog snaps it's attention to the car as soon as it sees it. Didn't so much care about the people around but apparently the dog really liked my car. Same thing happened when she walked back by the other way about 20 mins later. Even animals can't deny how good these cars look.

You all think people have some reactions of people with thumbs up and happiness or jealousy and anger. Well not for me today! I got for my brother something to match his Hot Lava FR-S a few weeks ago and wanted to give it to him during Christmas. I got him an Ironman mask. Color in matches, and I would imagine Ironman/Tony Stark in a Hot Lava driving around in one of his next movies.
Anyway, screw his gift. I had to put it on and drive it all day today. Reaction of other cars now? PRICELESS! From making people have a good time driving past Ironman on the highway today to making kids see Ironman drive by them. Oh yeah, the mask is not going to my brother now. It shall remain in my car. I wanted to Deadmau5 helmet in any color and with LEDs on them, but for now.... I AM THE IRONMAN! PS. No laws were broken while driving. |

Got to show my uncle the car for the first time today. I sat in it with him and started it so he could hear what it sounded like. I revved it up high for good measure and he asked, "V6?" To which I replied, "Nope, four cylinder." His reaction was pretty priceless, "All of that from a four cylinder?"

Got to my parent's house at 1AM Saturday morning, so they were asleep. I woke up around 430AM to greet my mom before she headed off to work, found my dad staring out of the window at the front driveway. My dad is a man of little words...his only words for the morning before he left for work himself were,"You got a new car? How much?" (...typical asian question, haha).
To my surprise he got home early and I found him walking circles around the car. He is a gear head to the very definition and asked me to pop the hood so that he could look at the engine. This is the first time he has seen the car in the flesh and for the next 30 minutes he was speechless as the grin on his face was absolutely priceless...looking over every inch of the engine. The next morning when I woke up, I barely got a "Good morning, dad" out before he asked me to see the engine again. This time he launched his assault of questions, that went a little like this: Dad: So is this engine a Subaru engine or Toyota engine? Me: Both Dad: Wow. Dad: So how many liters in is the 4-cylinder? Me: 2.0L Dad: No, are you sure it's only 2 liters with 200hp? Can't be... Me: Yes dad, it says it on the engine Dad: Wow Dad: Can you start the car? Me: Of course! Dad: Wow And for another 30 minutes he goes on and on (like a school girl who just got back from a Bieber concert) about how impressed he is with the engine placement and how it reminds him of the placement of a Porsche engine; how all the particulars of the engine bay is intelligently engineered...still grinning from ear-to-ear....absolutely PRICELESS!! |

I met up for lunch with a friend who got excited when I told him I bought an FR-S. He asked me for a ride, so naturally I obliged. He and I are both used to faster cars (he used to have a G35 coupe and I used to have an STI), so I was trying to explain that the FR-S wasn't that fast, but as soon as I took it full throttle in 1-4, his eyes lit up and he told me he LOVED the engine sound and that it seemed fast enough to him. He also loved how flat it cornered and how small/light it was.
These cars just seem to sell themselves. He seems pretty intent on getting one now.

It's funny, after talking to me one of the sales guys at the Toyota dealership where I bought the car is now thinking about getting one. Perhaps I should have gone into sales.

Off topic but this topic reminds me of something that happened years ago. In 1959 my bride and I bought a new Renault Dauphine (that's because there was a long waiting list for V.W. Bugs). We were driving from the Detroit suburbs to visit family in s.e. Missouri. We pulled into a gas station somewhere in the south to get some gas and two guys came out to service our car (this was the days before self serve). One said: "Golly, what is that?" The other said: "That's one of them thar foreign French sport cars!"

I had two more folks ask me about my FR-S this weekend. Both new nothing about the car and were shocked when I told them the price and specs. Good to know the car still has more room for awareness.
I also got to show off my car to a buddy who has a tricked out 370z. He was impressed enough to consider the car for his next purchase as his car has reached the point where additional mods will make the car impractical and he is looking at getting another car for daily driving. When I told him I spent under $200 to get two new tires, he was shocked as his ride costs thousands of dollars for new rubber. |
