I think I might flip over to 5W-30 on my next change, but at this point it's going to be due to cost as I can't really get much lower than $50-$60 a change on Eneos...

If I am interpreting this correctly, the oil cooler reduction in temperature appears to be balanced against the pressure drop of adding the cooling system?
Or is the interpretation that we are using an imperfect proxy (pressure) as an indication for film strength, thus lower temp oil at the same pressure has better lubrication. In both 5-30 cases, the pressures seem to be the same albeit at lower temps. |

You are correct but it depends on the type and setup of the oil cooler. I'm using a Kraftwerks adapter (no thermostat) with Mishimoto lines and cooler. I did this specifically to reduce the pressure drop through the oil cooling system. I also run 5w-40 Motul 300V. I also have a Koyo radiator to complete the engine cooling. The only think better would be a vented hood. Most people are looking at the pressure as film strength even though it doesn't really work that way. |

For a stock na fa20 what is the best recommended oil? Currently running amsoil 0w20. I was told to switch to 0w30 from amsoil... I see everyone talking about 5w30 here tho. Any downsides on going with 0w30? Will be running a forestor oil cooler btw bone stock motor.

I'll be doing more than a handful of track days this summer so I want to make sure the car is reliable. Possibly doing hood vents too while I'm at it. |

As for pressure drop, you sure the bigger one is lower pressure drop? Also, does anyone know if the oil cooler line is upstream or downstream of the filter (i.e. cool, then filter, or filter then cool). I assume ideally it should be filter then cool, but might be wrong. |

Yes the mishmoto kit uses standard -10 fittings.
The Kraftwerks adapter I used had -8 outlets. So I had to get a -8 to -10 adapter. From my data and personal observation the greater the flow of the cooler the less pressure drop there was. This goes the same for intercooler cores. Fluid is fluid. I believe the oil travels through the outside of the filter and exits through the center. That would mean the oil travels to the cooler first then to the filter. |

How come 5w30 didnt show higher oil temps than 0w20 in the first comparison?
I am not planning to install an oil cooler due to warranty purposes for now and debating between 0w20 and 5w30. I'd expect going to 5w30 without adding extra cooling would increase oil temps even more, which kind of beats the purpose??? |
