I purchase all of my gas, all of one tank, from a new Shell station down the road and always fill up with 93 octane. For me a gas station with clean tanks and filters is the way to go. All of the ethanol free stations around me do not carry 93 and are extremely dirty and run down.
The dealership I purchased it from filled me up with ethanol free 87 octane from a service station they have a contract and it ran poorly compared to the 93. My FR-S is much happier. Now I just have to get through the 1,000 mile break in. Ugh, 600 miles to go. |

This brought up an interesting point for me personal ally. Some one said that the car want 93 not 91 and 91 is the premium availible here In Calgary. I know of one station way south that has 94 but that's all other than the 91 regular premium.

I don't know what kind of difference it would make, but I agree with most of the post I've read about "why chance it messing up your car".... I wouldnt take the chance, its even at $.30 difference. Thats only $3 difference. I could see if it was saving you $10 or $20... but 3 bucks. No deal.
Also, put 87 octane in a motorcycle... you wont make it far.... if not tear the engine up. Knew a guy with a gixxer 750 and put 87 in once by accident, had to take it to the dealership to get if fixed. Bike wouldn't even run. Not saying this will happen to every bike, or even the FRS/BRZ...

For example, the new Focus GDI engine will make a few more HP on premium but it's also 12:1 static compression ratio(SCR). I have a suspicion that the Mazda3 does the same thing being the same SCR. Interesting fact, Mazda redesigned the skyactiv engine to use regular octane just for North America. Hondas have adjusted for higher octane for a number of years. At least as far back as the Fit. IIRC they can effectively use up to 100 RON, which is about 94-95 AKI. But yeah, manual recommends 93 aki. 91 aki is required. We might need to sticky the page out of the manual to discourage these posts. |

Dude, Ethanol is high octane...and you don't have to worry about Ethanol with this car. Now if you find a station selling bad gas, that's a different story.
Sorry about that. When I say required, I mean least common denominator. It's a math thing. |
