It NEEDS turbo, if it ever hopes to be better than s2000. If Not, then we're wasting our time, cause a used s2000 is plenty good.

Personally I agree with the first part, I plan on putting my supra dreams on hold for this car. If it don't have a Turbo I'll probably just save for my supra, but sounds promising that it will. Fingers crossed

^ I know what you mean, Im just saying. A naturally aspirated engine isnt a major reason for me to not get this car. Now if they announced this will be a FWD hybrid CRZ competitor than thats the point I wont get this car... Or if it gets really really heavy.

Its not a matter of turbocharged or not. Its what other choices are available in this price range: $20k - $26k
which is what we expect the FT 86 to be around.

Considering my above posts, saying that you can buy a used car, and suffer little loss in anymore depreciation of the car....you might as well get a used s2000.

and the current Miata has the FT86 won by curb weight if FT86 would even come in 2700lb form.

I REALLY hope they come out with a turbo model. I dont understand why some of you are so against the turbo model. Those of you who want to go fast in the corners, the chassis/suspension is the same; so why not have the chance to buy a model that will accelerate quicker? Exit acceleration will help you with faster lap times and a track isnt just corner corner corner, it also has a straightaway. Also, for those of you arguing that I can just get an aftermarket turbo kit is being ridiculous. A turbo kit is like what.. about 5k+ to purchase and labor? And thats not including killing myself over the wait time for R&D and production. That will probably equate to the same as a turbo model that Toyota will sell, except you have factory turbo reliability and warranty. Toyota.. please come out with a turbo model. I am only planning on buying this car if its a turbo model. Otherwise, the s2000 will suffice.

An AE86 successor should not be about having a turbo. if it is to be just that, a successor of the might 86 then it should be about weight, balance and being able to kick everyone's asses in a NA pocket rocket. Yes, maybe they should produce a turbo version to broaden the target market but i expected there might be more toyota purists on here that are getting this car for the love of the Toyota NA RWD pocket rocket and not just as a competitor for some other expensive sportscar.

turbo w/ factory warranty = good

if the car is N/A only, the target market for this car is limited to AE86 nostalgistas and racers who want a miata w/ a fixed roof.

a turbo lets the car compete with the 370z, genesis coupe, and the V6 pony cars which turn out over 300 HP at $23k. not saying those cars are similar to the FT-86 ethos, but they will be cross-shopped for darn sure.

I'm not against turbo, but why ppl are saying NA can't compete w Z, Gene, and other sports cars? It's like saying NSX can't compete w Pors, Ferr, Lamb, BMW, & other euro sports cars... but the fact is NSX can keep up and beat some of Pors, Ferr, BMW in the track without problem even though NSX only has 280hp.

Oh course NSX and FT86c is totally different car, but idea is same. mid power + light weight = can go long way. Light weight helps w braking distance and turn without heavy chassis roll, while it has enough power to keep the car go forward without fighting w steering wheel.

Now, thinking bout that. I hope Toyota will do like Porsche. Make the high end FT86 into awesome NA car and keep the mid end in turbo and low end been basic NA.
  • High range NA will have 220~260 hp (or make it 2.2~2.5L w 280hp) no lagging redline all the way to 9.2k rev engine, performance suspension w brakes. Price tag around $26k~$28k
  • Mid range turbo ver has 230~240 hp w sports suspension w brakes. Price tag around $23k~$25k
  • Low end has 175~200 hp basic all around. Price tag around $19k~$22k

I for one am much more interested in the max RPM of the motor than the max HP. This thing is supposed to be about fun, not speed.
