I double checked. The AZ6 is infact what was used in all of those cars I mentioned and will likely be the gearbox of choice in the FT86. I was confused by the AY6 usage thrown around but that is a different gearbox.
I read somewhere that that AY6 was used in the IS250? Maybe not? Is the AZ6 used on anything anymore besides RX8s and maybe Miatas?

I'd love an AZ6 for sure but I'm not sure Toyota even uses it currently and thought they used the AY6 for other stuff.

Of course I guess it really depends on what Subaru spec'd for the car :P

Exactly. The AY6 is used in the IS250/CTS/Tundra/Commodore while the AZ6 was used in S2000/S15/MX-5/RX-8/Altezza/IS200.

Oh shit, we had a miscommunication

I wasn't arguing that the AZ6 was used in those cars (I owned one of them :P ), just asking why Toyota/Subaru wouldn't use the AY6 since Toyota already does as opposed to the AZ6 which they do not use. Also Aisin no longer lists the AZ6, just the AY6 on their site. They could relist it of course..

As much as I'd love the AZ6 I don't see any evidence that it will be used in the FT over the AY6.

The AZ6 is also used by Toyota on the 4banger 2.0L Altezza/IS200... The AY6 is for bigger, torquier engines. If Mazda used the AZ6 in the RX-8, which revs higher and has more torque than the FT86, then I believe Toyota will follow suit.

Is the IS200 still made? I thought that was old JDM now and no longer made.. I have no idea though.

Here's hoping for the AZ6!

The Altezza is pure JDM. We didn't get the S15 either but I thought it was worthy of note.

A question about gearing.

If gearing is a torque multiplying effect how does axle torque (not getting into drivetrain losses right now, just bare with me...) relate to acceleration?

For example, being bored this weekend, I was looking at the peak torque of the Genesis Coupe 3.8L (previous/current gen) to the multiplication through its gears and final drive to its weight.

For the same axle torque to weight ratio of a hypothetical FT86 (using some optimistic numbers of 2640 lbs and 168 lb-ft peak) if it had the same tire diameter as the GenCoupe, it would match its axle torque per gear with a final drive change to ~4.25:1 with the same transmission/gear ratios. With a smaller diameter tire it could get away with ~4.10:1.

Thoughts?

This part. If they have the equivalent axle torque to weight ratio and both punch it at the same rpm, what happens?

Wheel diameter, as you said lol. That's why I asked, what's the question?

Same size wheels, same acceleration.

So what the hell is everyone worried about?

But where does the hp/weight difference come in? (understanding hp as torque in time is one the things that doesn't come naturally to me) A full torque curve would probably come in real handy.

In this case the Gen Coupe 3.8L redlines at 6500 rpm and the FT86 maybe at 7400 rpm. The rpm drop on the FT86 (with the hypothetical lower final drive and Hyundai trans...) from 7400 is never less than 4000 rpm (1-2 shift), so if it holds a decent amount from there to 7400ish, would this thing seriously keep up with a V6 Gen Coupe?

Wait I'm confused...I don't think it'll keep up with a 3.8.
If the torque was 168ft-lb all the way up to 7400, well the engine would be making a lot more than 200hp.

With your unlikely specs, yes... Right up until you shifted to second, after that the GC would start to pull away.

Yes, I have a thought. 168ft-lbs is a lot of torque for a N/A 2.0L. That is usually the torque you see in a 2.5L...

I enjoy comparing wheel torque with various layouts, gearing, final drive, and finding the torque to weight ratio. But I still don't see how it's possible to include aerodynamics. Because like old greg said, after first gear the v6 Gencoupe would pull away.
