there is a strap on the passenger side that you can pull to tilt and slide the passenger seat. But the drivers side is tilt only

I'm not planning on buying my 86 until next year, but my 3 year old is about to graduate to a harness booster, and I don't want to drop $250+ on a Brittax until I know it's going to fit in my future vehicle.

So, what fits so far?

Crazy: Remove rear seats and bolt in a youth race seat.

I plan on testing a few seats facing the rear because a few pictures have led me to believe the way my fiance sits with her seat it may still work with us with the most slim seat available. But honestly i have been looking all over for the regulations of bolting in your own seat. Honestly i would be more for this solution then any other and then when they get big enough bolting in a new seat. any one know the legal issues if any of this...or safety issues?

Anyone that has a car try to take out the rear seat bottom cushion yet? I know 911 owners remove both the rear seat back and rear seat bottom to give more room for kid seats. From the looks of the photos, I think at least the rear seat bottom could be removed. I just can't tell if it would help at all and it doesn't appear that removing the folding rear seat back is practical.

I feel pretty out of the loop here. I'll be 24 this year and am not even close to any idea of marriage or gf. I'm a bit of a hermit so I don't really meet people. No details to work out though, just a car to get haha

This is my backup plan. It should be fairly easy to fab some kid seat supports out of aluminum, bolt it in, and then LATCH the seat on top. That would get rid of the seat thickness moving every thing down and back. (everything in this car is down and back, down and back).

It's getting the wife on board with your fabrication skills that is going to be the hard part.

Do you have a picture to show where this strap is? I searched the seat when I had the chance to see the live one without avail. There is only the seat belt strap on top of the shoulder side. I could only find the level on the lower right corner of the LHD version to tilt the seat back.

Check the following link on NHTSA: http://www.nhtsa.gov/ChildSafety/step1

The problem with rear facing seat is that it points forward with a certain angle. With that, whether it be a convertible or seat with latched base, will interfere the front seat back. That is the unfortunate truth. So if you want to squeeze in three people including the little one, the front passenger needs to sit straight or even in a hunched back situation. The latter case is not really safe if, god forbidden, an accident happens and the front air bag needs to be deployed.

weird i missed this thread..

I have a wife and kid and planning on a 2nd one in a year. This however does not change my plans on a purchase of a BRZ.

You see if you have the commitment and stability, and to know that your going to have a family soon. And get the things you want. You have to plan for it!

The wife and I are set on a sports car, and the BRZ was the best fit for us since the announcement in 2009. Initially we planned on spending 25k out the door total when we predicted a 20k price tag in 2010. But 29-32k out the door only delays our purchase for several months.

we currently have 3 cars, 2002 Toyota Corolla, 2003 Subaru Legacy Wagon, 88 Rx7 TII. We will be adding the BRZ to our fleet and keep it at 4 cars max. The Toyota Corolla will eventually be replace with a another compact eco commuter, and the legacy will be replaced eventually with a Crossover SUV like the current Legacy.

I am surprised at the number of people that would avoid marriage just to drive some car. I enjoy the companionship of having a wife and the joy of having my son. No material thing is going to change that.

The limitation I see is simply finances. You have to find out what your financial ability to support multiple cars is. If you can afford another vehicle as the primary child hauler then that is the simple solution. Whenever I got out with my family I am driving the baby hauler SUV. Otherwise I drive my coupes. Used cars can be had pretty cheap and insurance is lower than a new sports coupe too.

If finances limit you to one car then you have to make a tougher decision. If you can't afford a secondary used vehicle then I would advise against having a small RWD coupe as the only car for the family. It just does not make sense when you will be carrying alot of stuff any time you travel with the baby. Stroller, bags, powder, diapers, etc. Wait two or three years and when finances permit pick up the FRS/BRZ slightly used for cheaper and have fun.

At age one and over a certain weight the child can face forward. Its a bit more work to put the kid in and out of a coupe but its not that bad. At that point a coupe as the only car could work but the FRS/BRZ is still on the small side IMO.

Ultimately its a personal decision. Good luck with whatever you decide.

Sorry, asked and answered. Here is the picture of that seatback fold strap on both front seats. It is located at the bottom, just besides the seat belt.

I think I need to try this at my next encounter with FR-S.

Did someone mentioned that using this strap and the seat back does not return to its original location?

This should be helpful for some people. This guy on a 1 series forum managed to find a rear facing child seat that worked in his 135i(which keep the passenger seat usable)...Im guessing the rear seat room should be comparable to the FRS/BRZ
