Thanks for all the answers so far, after a few more respondents I'll throw this all together in a spread sheet for everyone. Though from a quick glance it looks like the answers are all pretty similar save for a few outliers. I wonder of this means that Toyota/Subaru was successful in courting a youngish market or if they failed to appeal to more mature buyers.
To be fair, given the typical demographics of an online community site for a yet unreleased affordable sports car there is only so much you can read into it... Additionally it appears that the "cross shops" are incredibly varied, with many stating there is little on the market that fits their desires. Most are shopping used cars, indicating few, if any new alternatives to the BRZ/FRS/86. I'm not sure yet, I'm waiting for official pricing before I go to a dealer. After that It will either be one of the Luther Acura/Subaru Dealers since I work with them frequently. Though it sounds like they already have several pre-orders. We'll see if that changes when the real numbers and availability are released. |

As far as real numbers and availability go: I have heard (recently, today even) from several (3) dealers that they expect 2/month.
Hate the exhaust noise. Hate the size (fat ass). Hate the weight. Uninspired handling IMO. But yeah, peg the throttle while turning the the rear steps out. |

Gender: Male Current Car: BMW 540i 6MT Current Preference (FRS/56/BRZ): Premium BRZ Ideal Price: 23k To High, I'm out Price: 25.5k Other Cars you are "Cross Shopping": 2009 Legacy GT, BMW M5 E39, FRS (if the BRZ price is ridiculous) As you can see aside from the FRS, my other options are extremely different. This is because my PREFERRED car (and has been since before the very first hints at the FT86) is an FR with a flat four. Since this didn't really exist* I always just strayed toward the idea of a sleeper. A somewhat luxurious sedan...that can tear your neck off at the light and still handle the road when it gets a bit twisty. *Yes I know there have been FR boxers in the past, no realistic ones that I could buy today and reliably own/drive for the next 30 years.

Gender: Male Current Car: Mercedes C320 Current Preference (FRS/56/BRZ): BRZ Ideal Price: low 20's To High, I'm out Price: Depends, in future I'd pay up to ~40K for a turbo STI variant Other Cars you are "Cross Shopping": 370z, Audi S4, BMW 335i. Basically looking at a RWD fun sports car. The Merc is my DD, so this is entirely a weekend mod car that will be garaged. Ideally needs capacity to obtain higher specs thru mods, in the Toyobaru's case this would be at least able to handle a low boost bolt on turbo and make close to 300whp without needing extensive mods beyond basic support (i.e. not requiring new engine build, im fine with fuel mods/tuning/etc). Tho I do plan on doing full engine build in the future if its reasonable for higher goals. If they come out with a turbo variant that would be my choice so waiting for their future plans to clarify. |

Gender: Male Current Car: 2004 BMW 545i sport/manual Current Preference (FRS/86/BRZ): BRZ Premium Ideal Price: $25 Too High, I'm out Price: $28 Other Cars you are "Cross Shopping": Nothing really. looking for something fun to take to the track. i work from home so it would be smart to sell the 545i but i also like the idea of keeping the brz nice and putting it away in the winter and not having to worry about anything if i am trying to work on it or something. if there was a turbo version i'd want it, although most of my track experience is in an sti and i think the speed and the awd gave me the ability to glaze over my poor driving... so i like this car having less power and am looking forward to it teaching me more and hopefully being even more fun. |
