This more of an opinion, so take it with a grain of salt. I personally think you should be spending the money on something else rather then $25k+ on a new car at such a young age. Yes, it's new, fancy, fun, etc, but if I was you, I'd rather invest it in college or something till you know for a fact you'll be financially sound. If this has been stated and responded to, then I apologize for a repost.
Back to the car, I've never driven the Automatic so I can't comment, but I have heard good things about the tranny. Granted, it's not a manual, so you're going to get heat for it, but since I don't know if you know how to drive stick, you'll probably be offer practicing on something else first. And like others have said that I saw, you're going to get haters at school. People will get jealous, and might damage your car for "fun" so keep that in mind. But whatever you decide, good luck.

When I was first looking at this car, I was in the same situation. In my opinion, it really depends on how you drive the car, and the area you live in. If it's stop and go, go auto. anything else, manual would be fine. I myself have a manual. coming from an auto car. my left leg has decided to hate me because of all the city driving I do. Besides, the car will perform the same, and with technology being the way it is. The gearing of the automatic car is almost idenical to the manual. But all in all, it will depend on your driving style.

Manual. You can do everything the auto can do in a manual, just some things require a little more effort. You can not do everything the manual can do the in the auto. Also its an extra few thousand dollars... So save the money, and get some driving lessons- problem solved.

"coddled" because there ARE drivers out there like that,OR you may get a "garage queen!" taken out on weekends when the mood hits. who knows! i agree with you though! for the most part, most of 'em will have the "snot" driven out of them! Quote:
why does it have to be at school? haters and jealous people are everywhere! if ya got something nice,"some" people just want to try to f**k it up! |

my mom thinks it is dangerous my dad drives for a living and he didnt want to teach me because he know i am going to race. so then i decided to learn it all by myself i loved it. so my point is if u really like cars then you will want to learn manual, once you learn you probably wont look back at auto until you get really old and lazy.

Thats a decision you have to make. I know my first car was a manual and i learned on it BUT it was a beater Camry so it wasn't a huge deal even if i messed up learning. FR-S has one of the sweetest manuals out there and you will enjoy it.....only after ur comfortable with it. You said you are worried about stop lights and I have to say that is challenging especially in this car with not a lot of low end torque but again it is much more fun. #mytwocents.
Good luck with the decision. I did test-drive the auto and it was fun with the sports mode engaged! |

Seriously, though, as others have said with this car you really can't go wrong either way and all in all I think you've made a good choice. I have two nephews around your age and both have AT cars (paid for by their parents, ahem). They are both responsible drivers but observing them I can see advantages to driving AT first for a while, then learning manual further down the road after the basics have really been mastered and practiced. Also, kudos to your mom for the excellent parenting. She is both letting you have the car you want while simultaneously creating a situation where you can learn about money management with a safety net in case you make mistakes

Honestly man, you should have gone with the manual. I learned to drive stick last year in a 98 Corvette after I got my permit, which was also my first car. I just turned 17 last week, and got my FR-s last month. Wouldn't have gotten it with anything but the manual. My parents figured if they learned to drive a stick shift in their first cars, so could I.
Also, don't drive like an asshat and fall into the "spoiled kid that can't handle the car mommy and daddy bought for him" stereotype. I know I'm young too, but take it from a kid who has gone through hell at school simply because he drives a nice car, and drive responsibly and prove to people you can handle a sports car at a young age! PS -- I'm sure the auto will be awesome too. You're going to love the car. |
