They should do what FORD is doing, and add the Kognition wing to the parts catalog!

I'm going to have to agree with this. I wouldn't call it "rice" per se, but the body makes it look way faster than the car can back up. It's like when people put STi wings on base Imprezas, or TRD widebody kits on non-turbo MR2's. They don't have the power to back up the looks; they talk the talk but can't walk the walk.

Why does the car need the huge wing? Is it making so much horsepower that it needs the additional rear downforce to keep the rear end planted? No, it doesn't, therefore it is a pointless addition on a 200hp car. Does it need 6 piston Brembo brakes? Is it getting up to such high speeds on the track that it needs consistent stops from a massive big brake kit to haul it down? No, it doesn't, therefore it is a pointless addition on a 200hp car. See where I'm going?

Now, if/when TRD develops a supercharger kit or something to boost output of the car, I could see the point of these additions, but right now they seem overkill, at least to put on a road-going car. They can put a bi-plane wing and 12-pot calipers on their race car for all I care!

For me, if the body kit is for looks and does not detract from performance, but keeps it as good as without or better, than it is OK from the factory, BUT if removal of the body kit yields higher performance statistics, then the kit is garbage. There is also the matter of taste.

This kit enhances aerodynamics; I recall it was tested on the Nurburgring. The side skirts have the same tapering shape along the bottom edge as my BRZ STI side skirts which are functional.

Just like the late Celica and Supra, this wing is positioned high for safety/visiblity with the midblade lining up with the bottom edge of the roof. The left and right ends even angle down at the same angle as the pagoda roof. From the OEM it's gotta be way up high like this or way down low like the stock or FiveAxis spoiler to clear the rear window. I wonder how all of you who hate on this wing would feel about a not-so-high wing that blocks your view out the rear window.

Toyota could have sacrificed some of these functionalities to make it look more conservative/appealing. But not in this case; it takes on Function > Form.
I wonder if 18'' forged wheels would weigh less than some 16'' aluminum rims like RPF1s. I really dislike large wheels (18 is large to me), and i'd much rather have 16s unless the 18s actually weigh less.

Wing as rear roof rack

I can secure a surfboard to the roof and that wing. I can clothespin wet towels to flap dry at speed too.

The wing may already be technically functional, but I know how to make it way, way more functional.

Race Inspired Cosmetic enhancement still does not describe what people refer to as "rice" really entails. It is a pure lack of understanding and cohesiveness of a vehicles presentation.

Many enduro GT-3 GT-2 and GT-1 teams across the world use race inspired cosmetics on their cars without real wind tunnel or aero data aquisitioning, hoping it will improve the cars performance (which many times it does). Some get it some don't but thats really what we dont refer too.

the blue civic above is considered "rice" because it lacks cohesiveness, its an eye sore. It presents too many geometrical shapes that dont flow together, it ruins the definition that shapes the car, its color is offensive to the contours.

If that car was a musical composition it would be a series of discords and flats sung by justin beiber.

If that car was a dish, it would be a white truffle oil troute fish puree on overcooked lasagna.

This is a good example of a race inspired cosmetic enhancement without real quantifiable data to show its improvements.

In the case of the Factory Tune 001/Nur-spec kit. It IS a cohesive piece, It was designed not to alter the flow and definition of the body shape, but give it proper aesthetic enhancements. Its a functional kit! If you cannot understand what i mean by functional, try to analyze my examples of both as a musical composition or as a food plate.

so going back to this opinion;
Quote:
Maybe I'm missing the functional parts?

An "aero" kit that amounts to some nasty looking trim with a cheap badge. An oversized wing. Wheels too large for the car, serving no practical purpose. Brembo brakes for the red splash and name recognition. New tires and some vague suspension change.

I'd hope to see OEM quality improvements on a "factory tuned" car. The STi WRX vs WRX, or the WRX vs Impreza, by way of example. To me that's a factory tune.
I completely understand what you want. However tuning is the result of changing/altering the character of the same subject to be more complete.

WRX STI, WRX, IMPREZA are not really considered differed by tune, but rather trims of the same family. A Fender American Strat, Squire strat, ect..are trims of the same family, offer different tones, but ultimately are tuned the same.

Altering the character presentation of the factory 86 to the Factory 001/nur-spec is still tuning.

Lets try this..
PC talk
If WRX is to AMD Phenom II X6 1045t
Then WRX STI is to AMD Phenom II X6 1100t

If WRX stock is to AMD Phenom II X61045t
The a WRX Tuned is to AMD Phenoom II x6 1045t overclocked.

Lets try colors
If Blue is to Trim
Then Blue is to Baby Blue / Navy Blue / Datona Blue

If Blue is to Tune
Then Blue is to Dark Blue / Light Blue

Wow 18 inch wheels too big for this car? Get out of here. 17 inches are actually too small, well they are just about right, so is 18 inches. Heck the tC has 18 inch wheels!

This sort of rubbish turns me off the whole car in general.

It's tacky, boy racerish and not an image I wish to be associated with.

FFS .. is there no-one at Toyota with any sense of STYLE?
