TAS 2010: Toyota MR2 Sports Hybrid concept packing 400-hp 3.3-liter V6, AWD [w/video]

Back in November, the rumormill was set ablaze when reports began to surface that Toyota was working on a new MR2 packing hybrid power. Today, those rumors have been laid to rest... kinda.

In addition to the G Sport Series FT-86 and Prius, Toyota trotted out a concept at the Tokyo Auto Salon based on the third generation MR-S (ZZW30). Although the MR2 was nixed in the U.S. in 2005 (and in Japan in 2007), Toyota and its partners at Gazoo saw fit to resurrect its midship drop-top by fitting a 3.3-liter V6 where the old 1.8-liter four-cylinder used to reside and an electric motor mated to a THSII hybrid system up front. That's right, the MR2 Sports Hybrid Concept is all-wheel drive, and between the two mills, it's churning out over 400 horsepower through a continuously variable transmission (CVT).

But despite its boosted output, the 2,800-pound concept is a bit on the porky side compared to its 2,200-pound predecessor. Toyota claims it can run to 60 mph in 4.5 seconds – still better than the stock ZZW30, but at what a cost to the MR2's supreme chuckability? While there's no chance of Toyota putting the MR2 Sports Hybrid Concept into production, this could point the way for things to come – for better or worse
tons of pics here... and a video showing the car being made

not bad... but unobtainium...

me... since I'm partial to hardtops, I'd take this Porsche 911 GT3 R that has a 4.0-liter flat-six putting out 480 horsepower through a six-speed sequential transmission to the rear wheels.

(if someone was to leave it to me in their will)

Haha. Not saying the G's FT-86 looks like a Porsche, but I thought that pic was a photochop of the G Sport version until I read your message..
I just thought someone had gone overboard and started changing the shape of it.

Why not a car that slots in below the FT86, thinking 2 seat lightweight mid engine, 130hpish, with nothing more special about it. 15,000 to 20,000 sounds about right.

Think compact car range.

Cause then they'd have to make it a scion

as a mr2 owner (SW20 FTW!) i would love to see a new mr come out. but i would hate to see it a hybrid. nothing against hybrids really, they have potential but its not my cup of tea. also i would want them to keep it a toyota. i never really liked the scion community. (no offense to anyone)

also im suprised by how many mr2 owners are on this forum

LOVED the MR2/MR-S to death. It really was the Porsche Boxster for half the cost. Handling was great, performance was great, driver feedback -- great. I'd love to see it reincarnated again, but as others have said it's unlikely due to the lack of practicality in the first one.

Aww.
I still have hopes for the MR2 though! While the platform itself would cost more money, there is the benefit of being able to use an off the shelf FWD drivetrain. Just please, please don't use the oldest engine, we all know those are hopeless.

I think it's interesting that Toyota feels like there is a market for the 86, MR2, and Supra without stealing sales from each other.

I would imagine the MR2 price would have to be around 30-35k for it to be competitive?

I'd assume it would be priced in line with the Miata.

Miata starts at 24.9k. I can't imagine a brand new Mid-Engine Toyota starting around that price. I could be wrong though.

I was thinking more with the Fiata Abarth, 370z, and Miata Club/RF.
