My first illegal paying job at 14 was for cash at a pizza joint. I also learned drafting at my dad's engineering firm, in the days before CAD. Then I repaired musical instruments for a while in high school, mostly repadding saxophones and clarinets. My first real W2 job was in a zoo. I worked in the gift shop and got to play with a baby gorilla named Mwelu. He kept trying to take my sunglasses and put them on his own face.

Subsequent to that was my first run through college, during which I worked in warehouses and factories; in a steel can factory making 55 gallon drums; in a casket factory making steel and copper boxes for dead people; as a forklift driver; as a van driver at the airport; as a pizza delivery boy in an area that served not one, but two strip clubs, as well as the neighborhoods where a lot of the strippers lived; as a board operator at an easy listening radio station (#1 in the 55+ demographic!); as on-air talent at a country music station (#1 among all other demographics!); as a call center interviewer conducting marketing surveys for the US Navy, especially the one labeled "Navy Female"; as a delivery boy and video trainee for the horrid National Video Center, back when it was the home of the original MTV and New York 1 studios, and Bjork would always drop in and chat with the shipping department when she visited; as shipping manager for International Gaming and Wagering Business Magazine and the World Gaming Congress trade show; and as designer and admin of IGWB and WGC's first websites (because nobody else in the office but the shipping manager knew anything at all about the internet back in 1995!).

Real career #1 included Director of Photography gigs on three low-budget feature films and a handful of short films (no, you haven't seen any of them); as a television news photographer, editor, live truck operator and journalist in Tallahassee, Tulsa, Birmingham, Raleigh and finally DC, where I initially worked in the US bureau for the South African Broadcasting Company, Channel News Asia in Singapore, TV New Zealand, Swiss TV and at one point the first totally gay television network Q Television; and as a field technician and director at C-SPAN, where I led an unsuccessful campaign to unionize the field techs, primarily for the purpose of forcing out a tyrannical manager. I worked news events at the White House, Capitol Hill, the State Department, the Pentagon, several embassies and just about every other major government agency and think tank in town. I even got to make a couple of trips to the UN in New York. Most politicians on both sides of the aisle are even less impressive when you work around them daily.

For my second, more rewarding career, I just up and quit C-SPAN and went back to school to complete a BS in Finance and obtain my CPA license. Then I worked as an internal auditor for a real estate management company, a Big Four accounting firm and two rather large insurance companies, the last of which employees me now.

I've been fired twice. Both times I deserved it. Both times those jobs sucked ass, and I acted out. Both times I ended up MUCH better off in my next job, making more money and working in better conditions, which unfortunately reinforces the acting out when management pisses me off. But now I'm in a place where that almost never happens, because they treat me well and leave me alone.

So THAT is my job history. As terrible as some of those jobs were, I wouldn't trade the experience I got from a single one of them.

How about we chat about all the jobs we suddenly quit in our younger years.

Jobs we quit for no good reason. What we might have learned from mistakes in our past.

Does it ever do any good to talk to our children about such things. Don't quit your job just because you had one bad day. Would they listen ?

Can our children listen to us hum around 3k, or do they just continue to tune us out ?

And this ladies and gentlemen is what happens when you ask technical questions in the wrong section and then never bother to answer the questions posed in the first few responses.

Well, OK, since this thread is already messed up.

Back-in-the-day, when I was 16, I signed up to work at the local canning factory in our small farming community.

It was a hot, humid midwest day in July, at 5 AM, when I punched in for my first day of work. I was directed to this large, metal warehouse, where overnight they had cooked canned corn in large water filled cookers (talk about humid).

The piles of hot cans were scattered over the concrete floor of the warehouse. It was our job to get down on our knees and put the hot cans in cardboard boxes and stack them at the end of the warehouse.

Hey, I was a farm boy, so I was not a stranger to hard work in hot, humid conditions.

What made it unbearable was this big, fat, sweaty, stinky, slave driver, wearing bib overalls, constantly drinking cold water out of a glass jug ..... that kept kicking the bottom of my feet telling me to work faster.

So, at about 10:30, I told the pig to back off and picked up two hot cans of corn, in a threatening manner. He backed off and I threw the cans down and marched out of the warehouse, went up to this trailer/office and told the woman I quit.

I never got paid because I didn't work a full day. So, I drove back to the farm and shoveled pig shit, and didn't get paid for that either .......

THE END ...... of my factory career!

Oh, boo hoo. You had a DRIVER, which explains the surprisingly good condition of your hat.

The only reason I had a driver was because the first time I checked a jeep out of the motor pool ......they took my license away and assigned me a driver .....
