I met with the district rep. again today after a long hiatus. Supposedly the delay was due to not having a BRZ available for a direct comparison. In any case, the noise has gotten somewhat quieter with time and thus I had a difficult time pointing it out to the rep., even though I was able to hear it with my ears being attuned to it. To try to isolate the noise from road noise and other distractions on the road test, they put the car on a lift to see if they could hear the noise that way. The preliminary word is that the rep. heard a noise from the differential and will be putting another BRZ in the air tomorrow to try to do a comparison with my mine. Hopefully the other BRZ will either not make the same noise or the rep. will consider the noise abnormal due to its annoying nature, and replace the differential. I'll keep you posted as I find out more.

...which is precisely why I didn't change my differential fluid. I'd rather not mask the problem with gear lube.

Good news! The dealer called and told me that the district rep. did not hear the same noise on the BRZ he was using for comparison, and they therefore ordered a new differential for me. I'll be getting it installed sometime after the Thanksgiving holiday, either next week or the week thereafter.

Has anyone tried a different set of wheels & tires (different brand tire) to see if the noise goes away? Tire tread can cause this type of noise as well.

If the district rep. heard the noise with the car in the air, it's not the tires.

Edit: The new differential makes the same noise.

I had the same high pitched "tuning fork" noise at 70 mph as everybody seems to be describing. Recently did the noise generator delete and noticed that the noise is gone. Not sure if this is what everybody else is hearing, but it would be worth a try just plugging the noise generator hole in your passenger side to see if it fixes the problem (easier than having to take it to the dealer )

So did the Subaru rep say anything about a TSB or any other fix coming out soon? I hear the resonance once in a while since I don't really do highway driving too much...

He did not. Truth be told, there is still a little additional noise/resonance at that speed that the differential replacement did not cure. I'm thinking that it may be something that is common to all 86s, but that mine was making additional noise that, coupled with the noise that was already there, made that tuning fork-like noise. I also still hear the noise at 35 MPH that I did before -- does your car make a cyclical noise at that speed?

I'm bumping this thread to see if there's any new information from anyone with this issue or if anyone else has this issue that has not spoken up.
