Nice or Rice: Canards

Actually no, I sold the car before fixing my mistake.

But let's not pretend. Most of these cosmetic mods are intended to make the car look cool to other people. People put this crap on their cars to draw attention. If people say, "Whoah man, that looks cool," they're validated and feel happy. If people say, "Ha, that looks stupid," they double down and say, "I don't care what you think I only did it for myself haters gonna hate yo!"

Which is nonsense. If you do this, you're not fooling anybody except yourself. Everyone but you realizes that you put all that stuff on your car to make it look cool to other people. And I can prove it: If it were only for you, you wouldn't even care whether any of us thought canards looked stupid. The fact that you're getting upset about it just shows you care what other people think about your mods.

I can. That's the Top Fuel/Voltex S2000RR, which was built specifically to break track records in Japan. It's a far cry from some kid's FR-S in California that he slapped canards on because they looked cool and then started going to track day to try to justify it.

I'll opine that regardless what the internet experts say .... it is HIS to do what he wants. If he wants them ... all the power to him. Most of the time .... people mod their cars with an idea to personalize their ride. If there's a functional use ... that's a plus.

Is it rice on a nontrack car. Maybe. Will it actually hurt mpg and acceleration on a low powered car. Most likely. Is it tacky to use 2 sided tape to place these and later .... see them flapping at speed. Sure. But it's his car.

I get more irritated if someone allows the internet experts to sway their personal decisions. "Oh boy .... JoeBlow237 said the canards will look stupid. I better not do it."

So you still thought something was cool, then someone told you it wasn't, then you thought it wasn't. You still changed your mind based on someone else's opinion.

And I'm not offended you don't like canards. I don't like stock cars. That's fine. I'm disturbed by the intense negativity put forth by the community against anyone who's car they don't like. If I wanted people to approve of my car, I'd buy a Porsche. Not spend thousands of dollars modifying a scion. But then I'd still be a sheep modding/not modding for social acceptance. I can assure you I haven't been interested in other peoples opinions of me or mine in a very long time. I've had a lot of negative things said to me for many years. That taught me to resist everyone else's opinions and do what I want. I will continue to strive to make my car the best that I can regardless of everyone else's ideas of what it should be. If you don't approve, just go back to the flock. I'm sure your shepard will be along shortly to tell you what to diss next.

Aerodynamic is very complex and required very fine tuning and data to make it work. Simply slap on some ebay or even named brand canards not going to do much if at all. It may even hurt the overall performance worse than a stock car. Unless you're doing it for "race inspired cosmetic enhancement" then it's a different story.

Yes. Because as a human being, I'm not inflexible. I can actually change my mind when I get additional information and my perspective shifts instead of stubbornly doubling down with my fingers in my ears saying "Na na na na na na I don't care what you say!" I can learn and grow and change for the better.

But you assume that since you don't like it everyone who does is in denial. Ergo you are in fact inflexible. How am I "doubling down with my fingers in my ears" by refusing to change my opinion based on yours? You bring me a good reason why I shouldn't make my car the way I want and I'll change my mind(tip: because you think it's dumb isn't good enough)

i hope kids look at these threads before they make ridiculous purchases! Well one thing is certain is they make me laugh. I guess we were all like this at some point. Now im older and i see kids with excessive body mods, makes me chuckle.

You also said above anyone who claims they did it for their own enjoyment is in denial because everyone actually thinks their car looks stupid. Which doesn't make sense. If they said everyone thinks their car looks good, then they would be in denial. You also argued that canards are non functional, which is incorrect. And that everyone thinks canards look dumb, which again is obviously incorrect or no one would buy them. I've seen several cars with them, some of those see the track, others, I dunno, I didn't ask. "Most"people life aggressive looking cars, there is a reason the newer Priuses look the way they do. Market research is telling Toyota that people in their target market are more inclined to buy it if it looks more aggressive, therefore I hypothesize that it is in fact a majority of people who think canards look good, the opposite of your statement. Maybe the elitists don't like them, maybe even a majority of enthusiasts. But if you want to argue straight numbers of people who approve/disapprove, I'm confident in my standing
