Yes, the CPU gets throttled some before 90c. More specifically Turbo Boost doesn't run as much as temperatures go up. I think you start losing performance around 40-50C with the big drop happening around 90C. I think 90C is when the base CPU speed is throttled too.
We talking AMD or Intel? All Intel's I've seen are rated to at least 70. I'd wager if you are being throttle at that low of a temp then it's being caused by the motherboard overheating, issues with the VRM, or a BIOS setting. Hell many CPUs idle in the 40-50 range.

I believe recent intel Haswell and newer are rated to run up to 80c and only start throttling in the mid 90s. Due to the fact that they naturally run hotter.

Haswell like the 4770k has a Tcase Max temp of slightly over 72c. Tcase though is the temp on the IHS and is not the core temp. The core temp is usually 10-20c hotter.

The Tcase on my 5390k is even lower, at slightly over 66c. I've achieved a 4.8Ghz and while fiddling with the OC I was regularly hitting 75-80c temps and wasn't being throttled.

Oh thought were were talking about individual core/main core temps not package/tcase temps. You are correct then, statement retracted.

On a different note, I had to recently delid/relid my 4670k as the core temps shot up to the 100s playing GTA V. the relid (put some new thermal paste in there) brought my operating temps back to the 60s under load even though I went back with the stock cooler.

Man, no way I would be able to use a CPU that ran that hot stock. Leaves almost no room for overclocks =[.

I want to eventually delid my 5930k so my temps will be even lower.

I need to be stop focuing on pushing my CPU and focus on furthering my GPU overclock

I normally oc stable builds((for benchmark and when I need them in the future) and then I don't use them unless they are necessary (why shorten the life of the chip when you don't need to)

Overclocking done right little impact on the lifespan of a CPU nowadays. Keep the temps below 80c and you'd be good. And at least for me, I do new builds every 3 years or so, so any decrease in lifespan wouldn't be seen.

I do stable OC as well, current stable is 4.8Ghz and the temps are well within acceptable ranges. I'd like to push that to 5Ghz, but it's increasingly hard. Not sure if I could do it well without ln2.

I've had a i7 920 1366 2.4GHz that's been clocked to 3.8GHz for about 7 years on a Gigabyte UD5 board. Still going strong, I kinda wish I had an excuse to upgrade but it just keeps going.

I also have an Asus RoG laptop, the G73jh which had an AMD 5970 mobile board (pretty much just a 5750 IIRC) that was notorious for hardware failures causing grey, pink, and striped screens of death. The fix? OC the GPU a few MHz. Stable! Not entirely sure what the problem was, but I assumed it fixed some harmonic glitch or something in the timings.

Also I LOVE Noctua fans. so... damn... quiet.

So much so that it can no longer be used to determine stability efficiently and can even damage a perfectly working non overclocked cpu (ask me how I know).

If you decide to get prime 95 do a bit of research and you'll quickly find a consensus on when the last decent/acceptable version of it was. There are also several better suited alternatives these days (unfortunately I can't remember their names and they are on my desktop at home so I can't look them up atm)

Yup, it's not a good test for Haswell or Devils Canyon (Haswell Refresh) or Skylake now, aida 64 or intel burn test are a much better platform
