I'm starting to feel sorry for the numerous amount of graduates that are having a hard time starting their careers. It is what it is. I'm just glad I'm one of the few that is lucky enough to enjoy what I do and do what I love.
That's a double-edged sword. Because of families, mortgages, bills, the middle-aged, experienced employee is sometimes going to require a higher salary, because of the existing standard of living that he/she must meet. Plus, you may be trying to hire that person away from another company, and that may take money.

The fresh grad can be had for pennies on the dollar, especially in today's market, because they have the expectation of getting their foot in the door and making more later. What the experienced prospect has over the fresh grad is experience (won't need training), possibly professionalism, and probably more industry knowledge. What the fresh grad has is energy, motivation, and less existing debt (probably).

At least, that's what I've seen. And ideally, you'd hire one of each and let the old one's knowledge guide the young one while the younger's enthusiasm rubs off on the older.

Last random thought of the night, would I be considered an alcoholic if I take a couple shots (2-3) before hitting hay? I've been kinda doing this lately.

I don't know if it makes you an alcoholic. Do you get DT's if you go without for a night?

I don't think it's very healthy, regardless.

A single glass of wine per day is actually good for the heart, or so I hear.

According to the Wiki I read, no. Hmm...Maybe I'll switch to wine. I just gotta find myself a bottle that I like. Any wine connoisseurs have a recommendation?

Yea it's surprising how easy it is to just get a degree. But that's the thing, the basic requirements for STEM has less room for horseshit, which is why they're more desirable.

Having taken some undergraduate math courses where the professor covered far, far less material than they should've and gave way too many good grades, all at a school with an undergrad program with a reputation for being harsh and cutthroat, it makes me shudder to think of what is considered passable work in liberal arts.

That is exactly why they are legend: by dying young. Can you imagine James Deans in the current days with no hair and bulky belly?

Ha, before you get to your university you must think it is very tough to survive the classes because of all the genius who must be there, until you realized that they are no different than you are (or you are in fact a genius.). Then you see the professor had to give A's for the top of the class, even though he/she made barely passing the 60/100 mark.

One thing I learned from university is that as long as you are at the top, or near the top of your class, you always get good grades. In other words, you are not merited by the students around the world, you are merited by your classmates. So if your classmates are dumb, you have higher chances to get good grade. On top of that, it seems that the professor *should* pass a certain amount of people in every class, so that is why you see bonus points, bonus/bonus points during exams.

This backfires when you're at a top 10 worldwide university and everyone is of worldclass talent. Needless to say, I worked HARD in school.

This system seems retarded to me.

Why only measure against current, local peers?

I agree. The manner in which employers stress GPA alone has also lead to grade inflation at many schools.

This is part of why degrees and diplomas are not as meaningful these days, The standards drop. You don't have to be good to get a degree, just show up and do well enough.

What do you call someone who graduates Med School at the bottom of his class? You call him "doctor".

Well, obviously there's a lot more to medical science than med school, but you get the point.

All this talk about education, jobs, and money is quite depressing when I hear it.

I never liked hearing when other students wasted their time on stupid degrees that won't get them far. Most are forced to head back to their parents house or share a house/apartment with way too many other students or strangers that are in the same situations. I think some forget that college is an investment and to be smart about what they want to get out of it.
The ones that are going into school with a plan, follow through on it and finish college, they're the ones that will be all set up for a successful life.
