Springs and coils can fall under visual and performance upgrade also.
I don't know about this...

Sure an exhaust may sound great from outside, but that same exhaust can be nothing but annoying drone inside the cabin. That's the reason almost half the people turn around and sell their exhaust after a month in these forums.

Tires and suspension most definitely require you to sit inside the car to decide on. Ride quality, handling characteristics, and alignment are all affected by these type of mods.

In priority order:
Grimmspeed License front Plate holder
Wheels and tires (too much road noise and tire spin)
Cat back (stock was way too quiet)
Audio System - Full replacement (the stock system was beyond hope)

Not really I brought my exhaust, tires, and lowering springs based on others descriptions and experiences. Springs you may need to sit in the car and drive because people compare them to the stock springs in terms of stiffness. But the exhaust I went on Youtube and listened to sound clips and weather or not people said it droned. Tires and wheels again I did basic research on what tires seem to offer the right amount of grip. Basically it all comes down to how much research you do on what part you want to add. I always study the part I want for a few weeks atleast to make sure its what I want.

Did I buy any parts before I brought the car, no way but if I did I imagine my car would be pretty much the same as it is today.

That is to my earlier point. If after buying and driving the car you had changed your mind then your plans would have changed as well. In your particular case driving it did not change anything or at least not at a level that you are aware of. Research can take you so far but you still have to know how the car actually is before you can actually apply what you know.
