Actually, I agree with you. The "ricers" in the US think that they bolt on a body kit, fart can exhaust and some black steelies and they think they are ready to race anything that has come out of Japan or has RWD. The "ricers" over on the other side of the Pacific don't mod necessarily for performance, they do it for looks, which is why it makes more sense and is more accepted.

Also, I didn't look at the picture long enough--I had assumed originally that this was an american "ricers." Really should start paying more attention to the backgrounds of these pictures

US auto scene is just different. No better, no worse. The "American" scene was primarily been drag strip focused. Muscle cars and hot rods. Ricers came about as Japanese cars became huge here due to the gas crisis. VW/Audi guys have their own thing going.

And in all of these situations, you have those who mod for performance (drag, circuit, offroading, etc) and those who mod primarily to take home auto show trophies (candy paint, air ride suspension, $20,000 electronics)

I've seen some incredibly wild cars as a car enthusiast in the US.

Now, scissor doors are a bit ricey, but hey, it's that guy's money, and if he and his friends enjoy the car, that's all that matters.

Why the hate?
Not always though. If you've ever seen how these vertical door systems work, you actually have to open the door out normally about 1/3 to halfway, and then you lift up. None of them that I've ever seen are styled like real Lamborghini scissors doors where the door lifts straight up and away.

Will address hate below.

One company was making something called "Raptor doors" that were supposed to be similar. Never heard much more beyond that.

...snip...

People want what they can't have, and people want to stand out. Especially in Japan. Japan is a very conformist society, so a lot of young people rebel against that big time. There's actually a huge USDM crowd in Japan, just like we have the JDM crowd here. They build cars that mimick what people in the USA were building a few years ago. They do LHD swaps. They pull the Honda and Toyota badges off their cars and replace them with Acura and Scion. Weird, isn't it?
Well said. I think a lot of it has to do with bandwagon cool to hate. And I'm sure if you google my username you can see me loling at people who do the vertical doors thing, but over the years my opinion has pretty much changed to "to each his own." Also, if someone wants to build a show car, they just earned points for their custom doors. Maybe it's not in everyone's taste, but it might just be enough to make a judge think their car is better; the difference between a trophy and none.

I think a lot of the younger people don't realize that back in the mid-late 90s, Altezza lights (the first real grafted conversions), Wings West body kits, and loud exhausts and colored carbon fiber hoods from APC were in huge demand. Granted, there was some over the top stuff in the first TF&TF when it came out (like stickers, TONS of stickers) but much as I hate to admit, the cars in that show summed up the scene pretty well. Furthermore, EVERYONE saw that movie. I know, I saw it twice, and I saw the parking lots when I went, lol. The clean look has always been around of course, as have sleepers, but clean import OEM+ stuff is relatively new compared to outrageous flashy stuff. Probably because flashy gets more attention.

Also, I'd heard of some cult Western followings in Japan, especially some muscle car stuff, but didn't know it extended to USDM brandings on JDM vehicles. Interesting stuff.

i would not spend money to do this particular modification, but to each his own; and it's a shop [show] car...

People in Japan have always been "ricers". They really don't care what others think. There are even some ricer FD's/GT-Rs etc. etc.

What's funny is most individual "tuners" in the U.S. add shiet to their car when it's perfectly fine from factory to make it "fast" and never once take their ride to the track...........isn't that being "rice"?
