I have been driving standards (shit, long enough I still call them "standard") from 3 speed VWs to 24 speed trucks and might as well be driving an AT for all the attention I pay to my shifting. It just sort of happens on it's own with absolutely zero thought given. When I try to answer questions here I have to go out and drive while paying very close attention to what I am actually doing.
This whole "increased awareness" and "better feel for the road" crap is just bunk that is spewed by noobs that have just started driving MT or (like Berg said) feel they are elite in some weird, deranged way.
Sure there are some minor benefits (i.e. launch) to MT but there are just as many benefits to modern ATs. We are not talking the old 2 speed slush bucket ATs that used to be in cars anymore so the majority of the MT benefits no longer exist.

I take it that you don't notice the crazy amount of drivers (that are better for general public safety to take public transit instead) out there these days that even have trouble simply maneuvering cars around parking lots. I was thinking about that portion of the population. If you have trouble witnessing such things on an hourly basis, come to Scarborough and Markham (the parking complex doesn't even need to be an Asian supermarket).

Walking down Bullock Dr. last week on a bright and sunny day, I almost got mauled down by two heavy right foot AT drivers coming out of Loblaws within a minute of each other at two separate entrances.

Lived around this neck of the woods for two and a half decades never seen it as bad as now. Didn't even know avg people buy automatic transmissions until I came to Canada in the late 80's.

Ya there are way more drivers now so it seems worse but I think you would find that the good vs bad driver ratio is the same it always was. I do certainly dread having to drive up in your area though.

I think the real problem is more NOOBs have cars as families approach the ratio of 1 car per driver (or in my case 1.2 cars per driver).
In my experience it has only been a relatively recent experience that there was a possibility of every driver in every family to be on the road at the same time. This increases the number of new drivers on the road as they no longer have to wait to "borrow" Dad's or Mom's car to go somewhere.
At minimum, I think its a contributing factor.

When I was in college, one of my jobs was a part time cashier at a grocery store. One afternoon my manager walks up to me and asks "Did you drive your car to work wrecked?" That's what came out of her mouth, DID I DRIVE MY CAR TO WORK WRECKED?!

I walk outside and I see my Acura on top of the parking lot sitting weirdly. When I got up to my car it look like someone shot my girl in the head. The bumper was torn in off laying a couple feet in front of her, there was broken shards of plastic and glass from the headlight spread out in front the car. The drive side fender was collapse in on the wheel and the hood on that side was pushed in weirdly. We had cameras overlooking the parking so I saw that it was ford f-250, he was parked next to me and pull out too hard and ran into my car. Instead of backing up, he gassed it and you could see my car move over from the force of the truck.

It took me about a month to find the truck, he came back to the grocery store and parked real far back in the lot. I ran up and took and bunch of pictures of his truck's damage and license plate. Called the cop I called when it happen a month earlier, he pulled the guy over and asked him if he was aware he hit my car to which he replied "I thought I had something, I just thought it was a shopping cart" FUCK YOU!!!

I don't know why out of all that, the thing that bother me the most was my manager coming up to me asking if I drove my car wrecked to work. Car was totaled, got a check which I saved most and bought a 97 Corolla 5 speed that I'll forever regret selling, I loved that little shitbox.

hit and runs if reported within 24 hours will not affect your insurance and is considered not at fault. you still have to pay deductible. if it is not reported within 24 hours the accident is considered at fault. the worst are parking lot accidents as it is a crap shoot who ends up at fault. I just switched insurance companies and saved close to 1000 as my carrier doesn't like square 1 area. I am glad I now represent 15 companies as the price gap can be huge.

go scrape someone's bumper in a big suv or pickup truck, you wont even notice it this damage is very minor and even in another frs you probably wouldn't notice. your car and probably the other car wouldn't even move from something like this.

you meant report it to collision centre or insurance company?

the accident has to be reported to the cops/collision reporting centre for the accident to not affect your insurance.
Ps. I loved the old buick pics. that's the car I got my license driving. I was always amazed at how it felt like driving in my living room. my 1980 olds 88 2 dr had better furniture than my house! out of all the land yachts I had the fastest was the 67 buick wildcat,445cid. and it was so light due to the rust!

I doubt there are many in our age group that didn't spend at least a little time behind the wheel of a monster Buick or one of it's many GM siblings.

Took my driver's test in a 1968 Olds 98 just like this one. The description on the bin behind it pretty much describes the gas mileage...
