I have also noticed that sometimes the spinning satellite might or might not be viewable on the display. Interestingly, when I was "snapping" pictures, I noticed that if it not visible, the spinning satellite would briefly appear almost every time I took a shot. I repeated it a few times just to make sure I wasn't crazy, and it happened repeatedly. It also possibly??? induced re-capture of the signal, as location corrected shortly there-after. Weird, Huh???

I will pass the link along to SOA, if you haven't already.
Yes, pass it along. I tried to get the dealer I bought the car from to pass along the fact that the VSC speedometer input to the nav unit was wrong, but I don't know if they did. A week ago I showed a dealer repair tech the unit when it was not synced even though it had 4 (red) bars on the status display. I then showed him the vehicle sensor status with the wrong speed while we were driving. So, the dealer called me to make an appointment and I left the car with them all day. Unfortunately, they just called to tell me that SOA never called them back to direct the diagnosis so they didn't finish evaluating the car. They asked if I wanted to leave the car while they do nothing but wait for SOA to return their call, and I said no. So I am going to go pick up the car with nothing accomplished today.

Is you speed signal in the service menu also wrong?

I just checked my speed and it's off as well. It constantly reads over by more than 50%.
When I'm going 30, it reads 50.

When I last took it to my dealer, SOA techs spent 2 days with the car.
They drove it around comparing signal quality to the impreza with the same head unit. While it did behave fine for them, they were able to measure lower signal quality. They gave it back and said they would work on a TSB to improve the antenna.

I'll follow up.

30 mph is roughly 50 kph.
I wonder if someone plugged in the wrong units somewhere.

I forgot to mention:

When they had the car again last, they went ahead and replaced the head unit and antenna (3rd set in the car.)

The new head unit appears to have newer firmware and works much better. I've been able to use it pretty consistently for the past few weeks.
The time to lock is still higher than it should be, but I no longer get the complete failure to lock for weeks on end.
The navigation behavior is also improved a bit. Lots of little quirks gone.

From the service menu you can check the firmware version number and date. Mine was something like 44.1003 from 12/04/1 which using the Japanese date convention would be April fool's day of this year. Do you know what firmware version your new unit is?

I need to look up my firmware version, too.

In the meantime, I received this yesterday from SNE:

"Hello, when I last spoke with the engineers they were done collecting data and they were working on counter measures for both the voice recognition issue and the loss of navigation and satellite radio reception, I do expect to hear from them (hopefully in a timely manor) when I do hear from them I will contact you and let you know what is going on.

Also I will not be offended if you send me an Email every now and again..."

My dealer just called to tell me that there is a temporary fix for the Nav issue just out. He said a permanent fix will be coming in September. My car is just about due for its 3000 mile oil change so I will be dropping it off next week for that and the temporary Nav fix. I will record my Firmware version before and after to see if they update it.

It has been brought to our attention that Navigation unit is receiving incorrect vehicle speed or is interpreting the speed incorrectly. This was evidenced by going into the navigation unit's status menu and seeing the incorrect speed being reported. Additionally users seem to be reporting that when loosing signal the navigation unit seems to be using the entirely wrong speed while dead reckoning. Lastly, some users have reported that the unit looses signal and does not reacquire until the vehicle is stopped. Stopping does not change the gps signal quality, however what I suspect it is doing is creating a situation where the navigation unit is finally receiving a correct speed from the car, ie 0 speed. When moving the car is not recieving the correct speed and this may be impacting the ability of the unit to confirm the information it is receiving from the satellites is correct. I wonder if this has an impact on these issues.

Yeah, I'm the one that found the problem with the speed from the VSC to the Nav. I also have seen where the Nav had good signal from 4 or 5 satellites but refused to acquire a position lock even when stopped. So those two software issues plus generally poor signal reception seem to be causing the Nav's typical inability to know where the car is.

I also received a phone call today to schedule repair of my Navigatoin unit and satellite radio. I was told repair includes a "new logic card for the navigation systems operating logic and a new antenna assembly for the back of the (satellite) unit".

I bring my BRZ in on Thursday. We will see how it goes and it will be nice to have a reliable GPS Nav unit.

Report to follow.

Is this happening to everyone, or just some folks?

Mine goes out all the time.

I think it is happening to most everyone. I need to drive a few days, and then will come back with some news.

Fix Installed by Subaru

My dealer had a Subaru rep. come down to install the GPS fix yesterday. They said this is a temporary fix and that a permanent fix will be available sometime in September. This fix consisted of a new antenna and a bracket to mount it further from the head unit, plus an SD card with new firmware. I went into the service menu to check the firmware version before and after the fix. Before the fix it was:
44.1003 12/4/1
(That second number looks like a Japanese style date for April 1st.)

after the fix it was:
44.1004 12/08/0

The CD version stayed the same at 1.04.

In the service menu I also checked the vehicle speed sensor reading. Instead of the crazy reading more than 50% too high, it now reads correctly with a value of 59 MPH when the dash readout reads 60 MPH.

So... did this fix the problem of the GPS not knowing where the car is? Since it sometimes worked before, I won't be sure until I have driven it for a week or so. But, so far so good. I have driven it a few times, and each time it immediately locked on my position.
