If you send me a file, I can 3d print an enclosure and ship it to you. Couldn't mass produce them or anything but if you'd like to try a prototype I'd be glad to assist.

just saw the post on hackaday, and just wanted to say thanks!! i don't come by here much anymore..

i prefer to keep the clock where it is, but i believe your project might be a good springboard for how i want to replace the analog speedometer.. your project covers just about everything i use a scangauge for, only difference is that i want to see at least 4 different feeds at once(water temp, oil temp, battery voltage, trans temp, and intake air temp).

thanks again!

(btw tindie is the etsy of the diy electronics world)

The easy part is the stepper motor driving and stuff. The hard part is printing a whole new gauge face that makes sense and looks OEM. If it is something you want to do (and it is something I kind of want to do, but haven't gotten to yet) you might want to talk to someone who makes gauge faces. I know that the cluster can be taken apart and put back together without screwing things up. (several companies do make these: http://www.86worx.com/subaru-brz/int...uge-faces.html).

If it were me I'd go through these guys: http://www.metal-monkey.co.uk/acatal...nd_Gauges.html I had them make me cool HVAC faces for my miata. They do very precise work and have reasonable prices. I know a lot of their stuff looks kind of garish and ricey, but they can make subdued stock looking stuff. One could probably get into a business of cluster customization (lighting, needles, dials, startup sequences, digital displays embeded, other analog gauges hacked in, etc.)

So, the big question is, what would you put in that huge space on the cluster?

This guy has a lot (a lot a lot) of info regarding driving stepper motors for gauges. http://guy.carpenter.id.au/gaugette/...t-is-gaugette/

Another thought. I bet you could have two gauge needles right next to each other and show two items on that side of the cluster (oil temp and something else?)

I was thinking of replacing it with a OLED display or something similar rather than re-purposing the existing "analog" presentation. Drive it from a very robust Arduino or Raspberry that is connected to the ODBC II port.

Sort of like a Android TorquePro but with a different display.

Now to find a "surplus gauge cluster" to begin experimenting with.

Yeah, too bad the going price seems to be around $200. The other issue you'll run into is that there are a bunch of trouble lights on that "circle" as well.

I made it as a finalist. http://www.instructables.com/contest/glovebox/ ! Thanks for all the support and stuff.

In slightly related news...I built a workbench...which should make for a nice place to solder stuff like this. I think next is code cleanup/add features (universal warning no mater what "page you are on", warning buzzer, clock function, font sizing, etc)/take care of infant son (not born yet)/make a "mask" to frame the display so light doesn't reflect of the inside, model and print a case, etc.

Thanks for the votes and stuff: http://www.instructables.com/contest/glovebox/ I got second prize!

I'm taking a break from this stuff at the moment because my latest son was just born. I'm planning on taking my prototype out of the car and messing with it some more later this month.

I went out to the car today and the battery was dead. I guess I'll have to look into that.

In case anyone wants to know...there's already another product on the market similar to this and with some of the issues already solved like alarms, bigger screen, etc.

https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-M...00/Hepsi_2.jpg

Sizes are:
Small LCD (Small LCD)
Active display (LCD size): 3.74 " x 0.70"

Large LCD (Big LCD)
Active display (LCD size): 4.92 " x 1.69"

Huge LCD (Huge LCD)
Active display (LCD size): 5.78 " x 2:55"

These are some of the parameters that can be tracked also:
Oil pressure (oilp)
Oil temperature (oilt)
Intake air temperature (IAT)
Intercooler Temperature (ICT)
Intercooler Efficiency% (ICE) (Input and output should be measured together)
Water temperature (Wts-Ector)
RPM (RPM)
Exhaust temperature (EGT)
Air-fuel wideband (Afar)
Turbo Boost-Vacuum (Map)
The throttle potentiometer (TPS)
Injector Duty (Duty)
Volt battery (Batt)
Outside temperature (outter)
Gas pressure (fuelp)
Serial output (Datalog)
Speedometer (Speed)
Fuel level

It does use sensors vs obdii so there will have to be ports available to install them.

I am not trying to knock the OP for his idea but I just wanted to let others know about it if they needed something similar in a smaller timespan that already can do what this product will (eventually) do.
