Now if you care about actually driving experience it's a tougher choice. I would avoid the N54 engine like the plague (135, 335, 535 etc). I owned a 335i spent more time in the shop than on the road. I would probably also rule out the e90 M3, maybe an e46 if you can do most of the maintenance yourself.

Now the ones I would consider when comparing them with the FRS would be a 328 or a 128. Personally I find the N52 engine to be pretty much bullet proof especially compared to the N54. Personally I find the 328 to be a bit large and soft. I would go with a 128 6spd (the auto is garbage) sport package if possible. I think it would be a tough choice for me between that and the FRS if you can find a 128 6spd for a decent price.

But ultimately you need to drive them both and see what you prefer.
SOOOO MANY NUMBERS!

You came to an FR-S/BR-Z forum to ask for a non bias answer, of a car we all love?

You come off as someone who cares too much about what other people think so in that case a BMW is perfect for you But no seriously, FR-S if you wanna be unique and actually want an enjoyable driving experience at every corner Not only that you'll have less trips to a garage or parts bin with the FR-S and if you do it's covered with a warranty

An E46 M3 with low miles...

(or a FR-S if you don't want to spend your savings maintaining your nearly new but out of warranty M3)

FWD cars suck

Been there. Got 2 kids, 1 with ex, one with current.

Can't afford to make that mistake again. Basically my current wife could cheat on me (doubt she would with a man), never sleep with me and stop brushing her teeth and I'd just keep my mouth shut. Option 2, child support to two ex wives and rent the basement of someone's outhouse for myself.. LOL

This is NOT an opinion. It is fact.
Mechanical skills won't help much when the parts you need still cost thousands of dollars.

The transfer case on my brother's 2009 335i xdrive just crapped out at 60k miles. A replacement costs a couple thousand (I think maybe around $3000?) and the waitlist for them is a couple months, since apparently this is a really common problem. (he ordered the part in July, it's expected to come in mid/late september)

Until then, no ABS, no traction control, no AWD, and worse gas mileage since it's just extra drivetrain resistance at this point. On top of that, his dash looks like a goddamn christmas tree with all the warning lights.

Honestly, the FRS and BMW are very different cars. Do you want luxury? Or do you want sportiness? In my opinion, there are very few cars on the market that actually combine both of those effectively. Most luxury cars are heavy and have no driving feel, but on the other hand, you won't be impressing chicks with a loud, rattly, harsh-riding FRS.

I know this is an unpopular opinion, but I don't even really consider the M3 to be a real sports car after the E36 generation. The new ones are bloated luxo-barges with marginally stiffer suspension and tons of power to compensate for the 4000 pounds they're lugging around.

Z4M Roadster, best car I've ever owned.

Honestly, if maintenance costs were not an issue for OP, I would take an e46 M3 over the FRS any day...

I vote 2008-13 M3. Great thing about the E90/92 is that it never went through a facelift so a 2008 looks exactly the same as a 2013 on the outside. And dat V8 doe!

Just make sure you compare operating costs so you know what you're getting into. An M3 is going to cost a lot more to keep up than an FR-S, and the initial purchase price is of course higher, too. You get what you pay for usually, but the FR-S does offer an awful lot of smiles per gallon!

lol. Peeps over 50 might be cheaper for me in the long run, assuming they don't die with some horrible/drawn out disease that costs me a lot medically.
