In my personal experience, there are both men and women who drive well (we'll call them people), and men and women who are bad drivers (let's also call them people, or stupid people if you prefer). If you're wanting to support a proclamation with facts and/or statistics with regards to men and women drivers - well, there is a reason that men have higher insurance premiums, and doing a brief search on this forum for people that have been involved in an accident state that more often than not "some guy" or "someone" did this or that to their car, and not "some woman" - but instead of a more ambiguous pronoun (someone, this person, etc) when referring to a man, when referring to a woman you will almost always see "a woman" or "some chick" attached to it, and so it tends to stick out to us when we read those, even if the opposite is true when you look at the big picture. In addition, while you'll always see the feminine pronouns attached to the subject when referring to a woman, you'll often see adjectives when referring to a man that suggest that that individual doesn't fall into the typical category of male driver ("an older guy", "some kid that just got his license", "a drunk driver"), as if they're some sort of outlier - whereas you tend to just see "woman" with regards to the opposite sex given the same situations. Anyway, that post was longer than I intended it to be - please keep this forum awesome, and refrain from sexist, racist, or religious commentary - especially if you're going to leave it devoid of investigative fact. I think that OP (originally, anyway) was mostly concerned with his mom getting harassed just like any of us driving around in a sport car can be subjected to - such as people attempting to incite a race, tailgating, etc., but I think that the cause of those fears tends to be due to the sort of car that you're driving, and not necessarily who is behind the wheel driving it. Where you're mistaken is that this is somehow some game or competition that necessitates the need for a winner and loser. But if your dull and "lacklustre" days are made better by your perception of a 'win' in this discussion, then I once again humbly accept your gratitude. Go back to watching your anime now. |

My mom borrowed my FRS and she stated that some random guy in a sports car gave her a peace sign. Lol

I was at the post office last week and a 70-something lady came up to my FRS and exclaimed about how "classy" it was (truely it is) and how she did not realize that SCION made such a classy car. She also liked the color and in fact was wearing a t-shirt the exact same color (hot lava). If your Mom drives the car you may not get it back. It's a chick magnet.

Manual or auto? My mom drove a VR4 6M so who cares...however, you will have your front lip scratched or destroyed entirely and you most likely will acquire some door dings.

Came out of the Liquor Store to see a red FRS in the parking lot as I get into my car.
Then I see some lady (40ish?) smiling at me while she was walking to her car. I thought she was just being a cougar. She hopped into the FRS and so I gave her a thumbs up on the way out and she had the biggest smile on her face. |

everything about this post offends me. OP makes me sad.
my roommate and I both have brz's, we can drive them. unfortunately, we have to deal with people like the OP... seriously, your mom is better equipped to deal with jerks than you are, we have to deal with them all day every day, even without a car. |

he questioned if she could drive it without hassle, then proceeded to say that he is trying to avoid her getting looks and compliments.
this presupposes that women are somehow less equipped to deal with these than any male driving the car. while i understand where the sentiment may be coming from, it needs to stop. it is this attitude, conscious or unconscious, that perpetuates sexism today. |

I think the insulting part (for me anyway) is less specifically OP and more all the comments about women being shitty drivers/not caring about cars. True of some women, but true of some men too. Neither of my BRZs had curb rash, scraped lips, or door dings. My current one gets driven 50 mi a day and looks showroom new all the time. My boyfriend's Genesis has 3/4 curbed rims and a scrape on the lip. This is just about people not liking stereotypes, like twenty-something guys who aggressively mod their cars but don't want to be called ricers.

One thing I think we all need to sit down and remember is that we don't know the op or his mother. I'm sure he knows her much more than we do and is much more enlightened as to whether this was a fair question or not. I highly doubt his intentions were to raise a gender war on an auto forum or to be sexist towards all women. He was only concerned about his mother and if people would harass her. I could imagine if somebody was going to lend a family member their ford raptor, they would also be concerned about other guys...or girls in big trucks harassing that family member too.
Reading over the op again, it could be misconstrued that he was referencing his mother driving ability, or women's driving ability, but that would only be the case if you were looking to make it mean that. The very next sentence he talked about guys in the car getting looks and so forth. The biggest issue I saw with this topic is that so many people have taken it in such convoluted directions, that the original all question was lost. Would his mother be harassed while driving his little sports car? That's it Sent from my Nexus 10 using Tapatalk |
