The only reason I haven't locked onto a decision with buying a Tein set for my future coilovers, is that because reviews and experiences with Tein coilovers can be very mixed and confusing - many say they are the harshest, crappiest ride, coilovers they every had.. while many others say they are pretty good. (many different platforms and Tein models of course).

i remember in the 90s, when Tein was first starting to get popular and it was the go-to and most desired "jdm" coilover, you'd never hear bad reviews or opinions on them; only the highest of praises and recommendations (even tho most that praised them never owned them and only wanted them cuz they were "jdm/cool").

15-20 years later, after a 10 year break from "import sports cars" and only very recently rekindling my interest with cars again and researching everything current once again..I now read many many bad Tein reviews upon google searches on random various forums. Maybe even more bad reviews than good. Idk if those bad reviews are just bandwagon jumpers wanting to talk smack because everyone else is, or if these people were expecting a caddy kush ride.

ANyways..would love to hear the naysayers and haters of Tein products and your reasons.
It's true, I am quoting myself.

One can read reviews about $700 Ebay specials that are "wow!! these made my car handle so good plus they have 80 clicks of adjustment and I now take that corner 100mph faster!!" You can also read that Mr Racer has Uncle Toby's fitted but I am suggesting that Mr Racer would do equally as well on a similar quality shock. I would suggest that 99.999999999% of people don't buy more than one set of coilovers/struts at a time to do back to back comparisons. This is just not feasible. Maybe it just comes down to price. That is, at a similar price point all struts/coilovers are similar in performance/quality.

Good point lol.

Bilsteins (although mild/soft) are starting to sound better and better for me, vs FA and my other choice, Tein (or almost any other entry level coilover)...especially from a reputation, an experience/historical and a quality viewpoint.

At least I know Bilstein is the real deal and not just another entry level cheapy CO that are all "similar" to each other. Hell, if Lotus and Porsche uses them as oem, they can't be that bad right? I think I've finally locked down my decision on which affordable setup I will go with - B8, B14.

What deficiencies do you find about the OEM shocks?

These seem like it could be a direct competitor with the new HKS SP - similar price, similar spring rates (only slightly diff 8/8 vs 8/9), both inverted front struts and mono tube, HKS has helper in the rear though, etc.

Wonder which is better.

I can see the Teins may have the upper hand due to being serviceable in the US (a pretty big deal for the future). Idk if the HKS's can be rebuilt/revalved/serviced states side... can they?

Edit:
Apparently, Feal can rebuild HKS suspension; but only the non-inverted HKS's...which leaves out the new HKS SP and GT
http://www.rallyracingsuspension.com/page12.php

I guess it has something to do with HKS's complex design and also having rebuild parts being HKS specific and only sourced/available from HKS Japan.

tein is a suspension company as where hks is not. that would be the difference for me. i know that for the miata, the flex and mono flex aresome of the best options if your budget is south of 2k or so

Just browsing Tein's site...

The Body Type Note column for the BRZ Mono Sport say "interior needs to be cut, to avoid interference"
@CSG David or @CSG Mike do you have any more details about this?

The rear adjustment knob stick up more than most dampers; it'll intrude into the trunk cabin a little bit. It's the same as the SRC. We just "fold back" the trim beside the adjustment.

I should have shown you my trunk
Mine are the same, I cut out a small piece from each side to allow access to the adjustment knobs.

It is 40mm high. The tubing sits in there quite nicely.
The adjuster has since been repaired

I've seen two sets of regular Monosports on ebay for $1650 IIRC. Still looking for info on differences between the regular Monosport and the Monosport Touring models. I'm ready to buy as soon as I can locate more info, may just have to call Tein directly.

Don't think there's a Monosport Touring for our car though. I made an offer to the ebay seller for 1600 and the offer was accepted by them. Then I realized they're located in CA, sales tax

Thanks. I kind of got this realization last night as well. Went ahead and ordered a set of RS-R Sports-i since they have a great rep, can do dual duty comfortably and RS-R has excellent customer service (also their US HQ is located a few miles from my house).
