Ah, this. I had almost forgotten! It still doesn't address transient response, though it solves the partial load problem. Because transient response is an issue the turbine sizing and housing choice will still pose a compromise.

I brought this up a long time ago in Engine Tech thread. So the turbine still creates some partial load pumping loss, and although it returns a lot of energy back into the system by compressing the air, whatever the engine is losing to backpressure, the whole turbocharger can only deliver 50% of it back to the engine in the form of compressed air because the turbine and compressor have losses, and intercooling will slightly reduce the amount of energy too.

However for steady state partial load operation, such a configuration can increase peak engine efficiency by "recycling" the blowdown loss into the turbocharger, which then can perform some of the compression work in the intake manifold, and reduce the amount of energy the piston expends to do so. As an example, the BMW N55 engine powered cars get the same fuel economy rating despite a rather low compression ratio compared to the N52, and I believe part of this can be attributed to this affect, but I'm not sure.

Any Europeans with a newer 1.6L 1ZR-FAE Elise wanna try turboing your car to put the theory to the test?
