It's a pretty simple fix to replace the master cylinder, and the noise will go away... but people can argue about it on the internet.

How are you getting these things replaced? 3 dealers later and a call to Subaru of America and I have squat. Now I'm dealing with some of the grinding issues reported in other threads.

Ah, that's why. I've seen all over the forums people with the FR-S getting things fixed where Subaru says it isn't an issue.

So, have we landed on the clutch master as the culprit??
I have almost 17k on my '13 FRS and the sound is with me everyday unless I'm listening to the radio.
I don't want to go to the dealer unless I am confident that they will fix it. It sounds like a simple resonant vibration somewhere in the clutch linkage and the clutch master is in that linkage for sure. It definitely doesn't sound like a bearing noise to me. The FRS is a blast to drive and this simple little quirk does not affect it's performance at all........but it is annoying as hell.

I had a honking noise when driving at certain rpms, I think it was resonant vibration as well. It eventually went away. I'm at 11k miles now.

EDIT: Unfortunately the youtube videos are gone but it sounding exactly like a car honking. I thought people were honking at me the first day I heard it.

I am with you in that it is something in linkage or master. I can make it happen at will just by pushing in the clutch at a certain rate. Never get it during my regular driving though.

Mine is RPM dependent and only occurs when revs rise or fall between 3000-4500 rpm with the clutch depressed. It will happen with no pedal movement during those revs.

I get it, too, only under hard acceleration... It rarely happens, but as long as it is not damaging, I can live with it.

Posted under the other thread regarding this issue. Still waiting on Subaru to clear my warranty claim so they can get to work on the car. Tech said he's going to be swapping out the Throwout Bearing in the transmission once all the red tape is cleared.

I'll keep you guys posted and try to see if I can get a glimpse of the old Throwout bearing.

[Update]:

Interestingly enough, they're not just replacing the throwout bearing. They're replacing the entire clutch assembly...

Looks like I'm in my loaner for another week...

Toyota replaced the transmission, clutch, and throw-out bearing in my FRS, and it did not fix the honk noise. They then replaced the clutch master cylinder and slave cylinder which fixed the noise. The noise is coming from the clutch master cylinder, and replacing the trans/clutch/throw-out bearing does not fix the noise.

Thanks Mono...I'm going to pass this info on to Sparks Toyota and see if they'll believe me/you. What is the name of your dealer, maybe they will call to verify?!?

Just let your dealer know that the FTS was involved, and made the call to try the trans/clutch/to bearing. The dealer only installed what they were given.

Well that's a bummer if that's the case.

Here's my little report I got after I got my car.

If it makes the noise again, I'll be sure to mention it to be the clutch master cylinder and slave cylinder.
