You can theoretically use the lowest grade available, 87. The engine should compensate for the fuel by reducing the timing to prevent knock. Again, theoretically there would be no ill effects other than a loss of power (and subsequent loss in efficiency (lower mpg)) and the engine not sounding as good (you may even hear a knock or two) but what you're doing is putting in a fuel the engine wasn't designed for and over the long term (1000+ miles) you'll be putting stress on the engine (due to knock) that could result in premature failure.

That is for this car, a modern vehicle with a modern ECU tuned from the factory. Once you step outside of that you open yourself up to more trouble.

Use the higher grade, spend the extra $2 per fill up and grab a reusable bottle of water from home instead of a coke. Double benefit to your mpg there

I read somewhere that it doesnt matter what brand you get as long as its the same rating its the same fuel for example; chevron 91, shell 91, and thrifty 91....does anybody know the difference between brands??? and proof??? And another question is there a reason why pretty much 91 is the highest rating available in California yet other states get 93 and other choices???

I was switching between BP 92 and Costco 91 with E10. Started noticing crickets with the ethanol and they went away with pure gas. Got the fuel pump replaced anyway, went back to E10 Costco, and the crickets came back after about 5k miles. Switched back to pure gas and no more crickets (still going to complain on my next checkup to get a record of it).

Only reason I buy ethanol free is to get rid of the crickets... I've switched a few time (cost) and the crickets come back within 20 miles using ethanol. Had the pump replaced once, they still came back.... soo it's non ethanol for me from now on

They rate their octane differently, 98 RON = 93 AKI roughly.

I've seen stations with 100 AKI which is "better" than what he posted.

People have short memories. Much like the disaster in Japan, caused by cutting corners and negligence. Eventually these types of corporate mistakes won't be remedied by $$$. Zero excuse for any of it.

Plus Castrol makes the best oil in the world, and that's a fact!

Royal Purple finished dead last in a recent test btw

I've heard that the gasoline is that goes to the stations can be whatever random stuff. But that each different brand (shell, chevron, etc) adds their own special type of detergents and additives. I would imagine with 87 or 89 octane the difference is quite minor. Biggest difference would be 91/93 (whatever the top fuel available is for the area)

Did you guys read this whole thread? Octane ratings in Europe are calculated differently. You're not getting a higher octane fuel than us Yanks

Uncle (Onkel) might not have, as he answered first, but I did. And yes we do know the octane rating uses different values. Anyway, what we wanted to say, is that we do use the highest octane available here (Aral Ultimate w/ 102RON) and that matches the US93+ rating (94AKI to be precise).

Yeah i cant remember the source but i remember reading that all the "name brand" places such as shell and chevron get there fuel from the same exact source. I understand they use there own "special ingredients" but i wonder how different they really are. You know were lied to about everything else in this country, so i wonder if one really would be better or safer then the other???
