Depending where you live, top down driving is truly a wonderful experience and at least once in their life, every car enthusiast should own one. It is likely that many in this forum have not owned a convertible, so will minimize it based on appearance alone.
I never thought this list of convertibles that once rested in my garage were "ugly"... 05 S2000, 03 SC430, 08 Gallardo, 07 Aston Martin Vantage and of course, my wife's 08 Velocity Yellow Corvette - hence her nick name. Now, take a look at the new Porsche Boxster and even the 911 Convertible - sweeeet. What you guys should be asking or evaluating when it comes to the FRS or BRZ convertible is structural integrity / cowl shake, any added weight due to needed reinforcement, top quality (not all soft tops are created equally), reliable convertible actuators (top up / down)... BTW - I am sure the FRS / BRZ "drop top" will look great and be a blast to drive, particularly in my neck of the woods - South Florida. Personally, I'd buy a BRZ, loaded, convertible but only in any future STI with more hp/tq -- Vette spoiled here. |

Toyota always has this the best
1/ concept look hot, and promising 2/ Productions look like Sht, and poor performance 3/ Then make it even worse....How many Solara did Toyota sell ? ...... I thought so. 4/ Not even to mention that they killed the Supra first, but then the Celica and the Solara remain...what a SHAME! |

why are you guys all convinced the car is going to go to shit just because they made it a convertible? The MR2 Spyder was designed from the get-go to be a convertible, and it weighed in at a whopping 2200 lbs and was one of the best-handling Toyotas ever made.

Because it has to be a track monster! Everyone tracks their car every single day. And when they're not tracking their car, they're driving it to work... on a track. Because the race track is actually their commute to work.

The shape of the rear-quarter window just kills it for me. Changes the look of the side profile too much. No Hofmeister kink = no good. As others have stated, I would have preferred a targa option to this. But whatever, I already have mine and don't plan on getting rid of it any time soon, so whatever gets the ladies into the showroom, I suppose. I just hope the new Supra has a targa like the MkIV.

That being said, I do think you make some good points with the primary one being that the more variants of the car, the better for all. And while I agree that the manufacturers monitor forums, I'm not convinced that a few people (in the grand scheme of things) not liking a particular variant is going to cause major problems. We are after-all entitled to our opinions. Personally, I don't prefer convertibles. That's coming from someone who has owned two AP1s and an AP2 -- all highly modified. I finally went with a hardtop but that doesn't count the same as a coupe. And I feel that the FRS/BRZ definitely looks better as a coupe than a convertible. I'm not going to debate how many people track these cars -- or not. My guess is a fair amount but clearly not the majority... Just like I don't get into the whole form over function debate. Regardless on both topics, it's an enthusiast car which is my attraction to it. And I don't fall into your 20 something demographics that you describe in your post. Far from it actually... All of that being said, if the comments in this thread got you this fired-up, I can only imagine what the proposed "rain tax" in MD did to your blood pressure! |

I have nothing against convertibles, I own an '05 Mustang convertible after all, and don't really care if the car is track-worthy or not. I just don't like the way the convertible looks in the photos. It's just not quite right.
Even if "designed from the ground up" as a convertible, they forgot to consider the looks of it in the process. It just looks like a bathtub with the top down. If it were a two-seater (and shorter) I think it would work, but not without those changes. It would be infinitely better as a Targa, (think Ferrari 308GTS, but better). ....and of course with LOUVERS!
