with the catted headers that are out there now none are smog legal in cali? would it be easy for a cop to tell you had one? im more worried about getting a 10k fine rather than passing smog. if i need to i can swap out the headers when need be. i want to get headers but its definatly not worth the risk of the 10k fine. so my question is is it worth getting a catted header? is there still risk of getting a ticket? is it worth the money for gains? what kind of gains can i expect? and if i get uel catted would i still get that uel sound.

Just like any mod you do run a risk of it not being liked by your dealership when an issue rises and they blame the aftermarket part or the cops because your exhaust is too loud, etc they have their risks. I can tell you I run a JDL Uel catted headers. I drive right by cops all the time, no issue. Come smog time, I will be switching it over to the oem one and not babe any issue, it's only once every couple of years so the hassle is not much of a hassle, plus it's just fun getting down and dirty and working on my car, but that's just me.

If a cop knows what to look for then yes it's easy. All he has to do is look down and notice that the piping is shinier than everything else.

As for gains you wont see much from catted headers. A big reason why headers even give gains is the increased airflow from removing the headers.

If you are serious about catted headers but also not attracting the cops get the JDL catted headers. They arent much louder than stock but still give you the subaru rumble

Even if we assume that you wanted to write "removing the cat" not headers, your statement is not even wrong.

mate I am not across all the laws and stuff in California, but I hear they are very strict.

an option for more performance that's not going to be obvious would be to just re-tune your stock car for E85 fuel.

given that cali fuel is usually 91 at best, you will get a nice performance bump on E85, and your car will look completely stock. you should be able to get around 20 wheel hp increase just with e85 fuel/tune. If you buy your own flash device like tactrix or OFT or Ecutek cable then you could flash it back to stock any time you liked and be easy to pass full emmissions tests.

No no no, he is still wrong I didn't want to go into details because this topic is beaten to death and even than misconceptions like that are still alive and whats worse they are communicated like godspel.

But fine, in short the gains are both from the deader design and a cat. ANd also, the peak number is not the whole story. In aftermarket headers there are hi-flow metallic cats of different density which are much more free-flowing than OEMs. You can find over the internet on many cars that Hi-flow cats rob only a few HP. If you want FA20 numbers, you can check for example P&L measurements:

So his statement is wrong.
