Right, because tech-savvy drivers and driving enthusiasts are mutually exclusive.

When I go out to drive for pure enjoyment, whether I'm hitting corners late at night or cruising in the morning, I like to:

a) Have some idea of where the Hell I am while exploring new roads. I've only been on this island 5 months. There's a LOT more to it than it looks, and it's easy to get frustratingly lost.

b) I like to listen to music, and I want my entire music collection accessible so I can listen to *anything* that strikes my fancy. I tend to turn it off when driving really hard but it still needs to be available.

Right now I'm meeting these needs with my Android phone and a 120GB iPod (which is full, BTW). Both are barely adequate. My phone's small screen and poor battery life make navigating while driving difficult for any long period of time. The iPod is yet another device with cables protruding into the cabin, and my Evo's head unit controls for the iPod suck so changing tunes requires far too much attention.

If I could replace all that with a touchscreen interface running Android with a large SSD drive for internal storage and 3G Internet access (for Google Maps updates and streaming music) I'd do it in a heartbeat. It means I can handle navigation and music tasks with less effort and therefore focus more on *gasp* enthusiastic driving.

An Android tablet is basically a giant smartphone. Combine it with the proper audio I/O & amp hardware and maybe a CD/DVD drive and you have a total replacement for a headunit + GPS navi that costs less, weighs less, can be updated over-the-air (via 3G), and if you design it right you can remove it from the car and use it as your regular tablet. I dunno what's taking the auto industry (OEM and aftermarket alike) so long to catch on to this.

Looks like the Subaru at TMS has one of these, although this specific one is for an electric car

http://pioneer.jp/carrozzeria/ev/index.html

There was also a report in motortrend that nav will be standard on the BRZ.

I have a pioneer nav in my car now and I love it. Also looks like this one has some tie ins with the ECU. Maybe it won't be such a bad thing after all.

At first i didn't like the aspect of having a touch screen navi but then i remembered that i do get lost quite a bit so it would be pretty handy. Granted that it does do more than just navigation and it has radio, mp3, and maybe gauge functions then i could get behind it. I'd rather that it didn't look so easy to steal because the last thing i want is to come back to my car to see that nice piece of equipment ripped out.

The Subaru press release pics show a non-NAV system, so I don't think Motortrend is correct (shouldn't be surprising).

Maybe the BRZ will have digital gauges like the GT-R?

We can only hope it won't.

Drivers car should have you focus on a digital screen with gauges displayed..

If it has this it would be great!!!

If not I am going to be getting a Tablet that has windows 7 run and install software that can get that data from the ecu.... seen this done in the Audis and VWs!

(mind you doesn't look as good but better then having just a touch nav... have pretty much a whole touch pc in the dash.)

i hate to dash your hopes but the fr-s will probly have this

and this as an upgrade to the standard system

since its a scion they would use scion based systems, but i really do not think this is a bad thing since that alpine head unit is really nice for a stock head unit.

I had a good look at the car yesterday, and working in automotive infotainment (the stuff I develop goes in Jaguars & Land Rovers/Range Rovers) I was particularly interested in the infotainment system, I'm assuming this will mainly be relevant to the UK(EU?) Toyota though.

I'm pretty sure that it is a similar unit to the one my boss has in his Prius (10MY), which certainly isn't a bad thing, it was certainly the same Denso navi engine, but seems to have had a few tweaks.

It was a double din system with both buttons on the edge and touch screen (best of both worlds). On the right hand edge of the unit there was a USB port and and SD card slot (possibly an AUX port too), when I removed the SD card from the slot the HMI to access the navigation screens greyed out, so it looks like the map data is stored on an SD card, this makes map updates very simple (HDD based systems are not always updatable outside of a dealership). When we entered a destination we were able to see that there were maps for the whole of Europe as the car thought we were in the Pyrenees (must have been the last GPS position the car picked up, we were inside in Birmingham).

The iPod function looked the same as my bosses car, he says it isn't the best implementation he's seen (obviously that is the one in the Jaguars ) but that it works OK, he prefers to use the Bluetooth streaming, which was also supported by this head unit. One thing to note is that the USB socket was on the head unit, which could cause the iPod lead to trail dow past the AC controls/gear stick.

The USB Port was on the head unit? I thought all of the 86/BRZ/FRS' have it down in front of the shifter? Was the one down there covered up?

Also, if this tickles anyone's fancy. iOS has an App available:

http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/dashc...321293183?mt=8

This app uses a device that plugs into your OBDII Port and gives you real time data of various things. I'm not sure if it has an Android/WinPho7 counterpart or not, though.

If you wanted to mount an iPad/Android Tablet/Windows 8 Tablet up in your car, you could use something like this to give you info, on top of being a music player, etc.
