Well, the Bimmer is my DD. The Exige, believe it or not, is not the best candidate for a track car. I love the car but there are so many issues. Mind you most of them can be fixed but its still a pain. I'll just list a few of them.
- Expensive front and rear clam to repair - Weak rear toe link - Oil starvation issue - Fuel starvation issue - Terrible tranny linkage - Very limited camber adjustment - Poor visibility

I'm facing a similar decision... do I keep the 350z, which I should owe around 16k on by the time this car is released? Or do I get something new and exciting... something lighter and possibly more agile... something easier to modify and maintain.. but something that will most likely be slower and less torquey out of the box? I'm still leaning towards the FR but I've gone back and forth a couple of dozen times and have no idea where I'll end up next year.

I don't think I'll make anything on it... it really depends on if these used car values hold up. If anything I might walk away with a couple grand as the amortization catches up with the value - but it would go towards the TTT of any new car and maybe a few bolt ons.
"Affording" the car isn't really part of my consideration. If I bought what I could afford I'd be shopping the M3 range (hopefully that doesn't come across snooty - because that's not me, its just where my budget is). However I do have some other things I would like to do in the next few years so I'm not shopping the top of my range. If I bought something around $25k my payment would be a couple hundred less than the Z. NADA clean retail on the Z now is around 21k, a few less for trade in of course.

I don't know how familiar you are with boxer engines, but "easy to modify" isn't a phrase I would use to describe them. Things that are typically "easy" on other engines can be painfully time consuming on boxer engines.
i.e: fuel injectors fuel rails spark plugs basically anything that requires getting to the valve covers turbo inlet [ of course, this won't really apply to an N/A motor unless it snakes underneath the intake manifold ] On the plus side, there should be ample tuning capabilities: Cobb/Open Source Don't get me wrong. I love boxer motors, but you have to consider the differences. I'm facing a similar dilemma. I have a fairly modified STI [bigger turbo, big TMIC, e85], which I don't owe on. For me, it all depends on how much the FR-S weighs. I'll just have to wait and see. |

J/K :P I have this mental block on any car payment above around $500, so I never do. The most I've spent on a new car was the S2K, which would have been paid off in about 2.75 years but I sold it before then. I will never shop at the top of my budget, just too risky in the current economy. Hell, I might just take 401k money out considering how horrible the market is doing, at least I'll gain money instead of losing :P If the market turns around I'll get a car loan for the FR-S and pay off 401k loan :P Credit union will do so, they've done it before on cars I bought in cash and wanted cash back to reinvest in higher interest investments. Anyways, if you come out positive, and like the FR-S more, do it. If it's negative, don't do it! For me, the only car I owe money on right now is the Accord EXL I bought for my parents, and I just owe 3k on that, so I'll likely pay it off before the FR-S even comes out. Most likely I'll be replacing my parents other car around the same time the FR-S comes out so I'll likely go from 0 car loans to 2

![]() I just don't want to spend $80k on an Evo X, or $70k on a 370Z (us Aussies get screwed BIG TIME). The wife wants an Audi TTS ($110k!) but I'm not having any part of it when a Golf GTI R is $55k... |

Previously, I had been thinking of getting the MR-S and putting in the 2ZZGE and it will be nearly perfect for me.
However, as I needed it to be a dual purpose (DD and track) car as cars in my country are very very expensive and it is just too impractical as I can hardly hold anything in the boot in the MR-S. Addtionally,I am currently now driving a boxer and enjoying it. Therefore for me, there is no new/used car that fit as perfectly as what I want that sums up the above. - Light weight - Reasonable high HP - Well balanced - FR (This alone hardly has any real competitors) - Boxer - Reasonable for daily drive (Boot for at least groceries?) By the way, in my country, there are so many cars that the government implemented a lot of taxes for cars. Hit me real hard on this when I read all the pricings in US and AUS. Yeah the 370Z costs SGD$217,800 (USD$180,000) on my side. http://www.sgcarmart.com/new_cars/ne...?CarCode=10700 |
