Hey, maybe they did. Parts constraints and all.

Did they say how many for the U.S.?

I would take this color (as orange is my wife's favorite) since it's going to be almost exclusively a trailered race car.

The press release was from Toyota USA. Generally when US sites say the number they are talking just USA. Each region is totally independent of the other for such things. We just tend to forget that.
So 860 for US, 20 for Canada, some unknown number for Japan, probably 0 for Europe and so on.

Here's a look at a pre-production sample. It has the base interior instead of the upgraded interior that should be in the production units. It also appears to have started out as red and was resprayed orange (note the color of the firewall in the under hood shots).
If you're like me, you may enjoy the video more with the sound muted.

Idk i think Raiti's innuendos are kinda funny.

Color looking good though. I told my dealer to put me on a list at msrp for the special edition or a neptune blue 2023.

They really should have done more with this "special edition"....at this point it really only looks like a different colour option....(well theres the "aftermarket" wheels and exhaust too....)

-The 2020 Hakone had a unique tan/black with tan stitched interior to go with the green/bronze exterior.
-The 2019 TRD edition had the Brembos, TRD kit and exhaust.
-The 2017 860 special edition had the orange stitching, funky orange/red that came with unpainted underhood, and the upgraded interior for 2017.
-The 2018 i guess had the black accents on the "black" edition which..wasnt much but they didnt really call it a special edition car. (that and some other colours like the thunder grey/blue i guess...if that counts?)
-2016 had the RS2.0 (Lunar storm, tan/stiched interior)
-2015 had the RS1.0 (yellow, TRD Kit, TRD mods)
-2014 had the 10 series (funky silver colour, some white accent bits, upgraded interior, some useless solar light stuff)

This is going to be exactly in line with all the other "special" editions. As pointed out this is a pre production without the interior upgrades.
The only really upgraded editions were the TRD and the RS.1. Everything elase was some colour, wheels and interior bits just like this one.

Are they even doing anything to the interior on this new one? That would at least put it on par with the color tweaked past special editions.

Nothing has indicated so far it would change (aside from getting the upper trim interior vs the base trim shown in this prototype)

See we don't know that yet. We are guessing on the little info they have released.
At least all the rumours of "this one will have a turbo" have stopped every single time they announce a special edition!

Per the Canadian spec sheet the SE has all the features of a premium plus,

+ Performance Exhaust w/Black Tips
+ Premium Exterior Colour (Orange)
+ Leather Steering Wheel (Orange
Stitching)
+ Door Trim Moulding w/SE Logo
+ Shift Boot w/SE Stitching
+ 18" 15-Spoke Wheels
+ Leather Seats w/SE Stitching
+ TCD Duck Bill Spoiler (Black Painted)

so no one panic about the base interior in that video..
