I went to my Guru friend on Friday and he worked out that the remote wire is 12 volts and is basically the same wire as the power wire that goes to the battery.

I think what we learned was the 903 transmitter is faulty and I will have to get a new one before I can fully try it out all over again. It sounds like I wasn't doing anything wrong, however getting the wires cross might have blown the 903 transmitters as cheap chines wire transmitter hasn't got a reverse polarity protection that stops popping electronics from crossed wires
