Many of the parts however are not! I know I keep harping on that subject and some will say that is irrelevant but it really does apply since the car is no longer 100% US made..

This all kinda reminds me of Dell Corporation. For much of my 20 odd years in IT, Dell has been part of that journey, whether being the chosen brand for the servers on the back end or front end client machines like desktops and laptops.

In the start their quality was so-so being an average mish mash of various brands for internal components, but I remember their service and warranty management being top of the game and that's the angle that got their foot in the corporate door. Large business does not care about quality they care about up time, so if the inevitable failures were promptly dealt with, everyone was happy.

These day's I regard Dell PC's very favorably. Their quality has improved, spec's are great and ease of purchase and warranty are still great. That brings me back to cars. At the end of the day I honestly don't care where my car is made. I just want a well screwed together product, by a company that has proper quality control and invests in solid R&D for their chosen models.

If it came down to say an average component made in the assembling country or a higher quality component for the same price, but sourced from another part of the world, I'd rather the higher quality one.

My IT experiences have helped me come to terms with every car being a Frankenstein mishmash of parts a very long time ago. I don't think this is a negative thing though, far from it. Its always been survival of the fittest that pushes each component manufacturer to stay on top of their own R&D and quality control.

The way I see it in the end is quality components assembled in a quality plant passing through many layers of quality control from the tiniest bolt and screw to a fully assembled car with the only regulating factor being price point. For the price point the twins were designed and manufactured to live I'm over the moon happy with their quality.

I deal with it all the time. Some hillbilly wants to bash my "riceburner" as not being American while he's driving a Chevy truck built in Mexico from Chinese parts...

Most American car has been the Camry for years and truck was the Tundra IIRC.

Honestly, the main difference I see on a daily basis is ultimately the engineering behind the cars. Assembly and where something is made doesn't matter so much as idiotic design and engineering decisions. People seem to thing German cars are great, but why do VW's all smell like damn crayons and they all seem to have crumbling wiring insulation.

I assure you that urban legend aside even the Mexican plants have the same level of quality control as the ones in Japan. People seem to picture Japanese plants as this wonderful fairyland of automotive technology while Mexican plants are a shack out in the desert. This is not true anymore (it was once back in the 80s) and if I took you in a plant and didn't tell you what country you are in you would probably never be able to tell. In fact many of the plants in Japan are aging and showing it whereas plants in Mexico, China and even India are brand new state of the art facilities.
I know this will not go over well on a forum populated by people that adhere to the whole "Japanese cars rule the world" mythos but it just does not fly anymore.

As a side note, i would rather have a mexican vw gti than a german one. Seem to be improving and more solid each year they

I had a 1978 VW Rabbit that I really liked. I noticed that after a couple of years the outside rearview mirror started to delaminate. I saw this with a lot of VW's from that era. Did their supplier just not do the manufacturing correctly? Did anyone else notice this? Do they still do this?
