Its slow compared to what?
and what is considered slow to a driver? I acknowledge that this car is slow...but i don't know what "slow" is considered to some people. I dont find this car slow. Besides just mashing the pedal down and getting that feeling of speed...im already over the speed limit in like 2 seconds....and im immediately taking my foot of the gas because I'm not gonna be that speeder douche. Perhaps ive driven enough modern torqueless wonder econoboxes to not get spoiled by gobs of unusable power. (2ZZ 1.8L VVTLi motor, Honda fit Earth Dreams 1.5L, 2ZR-FSE 1.8L 137hp with valvematic) The BMW X1 B48 2.0 Turbo 225hp is probably the most powerful car i've ever owned. Plus this is a small high revver of an engine, most people are scared to rev their cars past 5000rpm, because it makes alot of noise. My wife (then gf) would not redline her old Nissan Versa way back when when it was needed to make a pass on a highway. I noticed it everytime and told her everytime you can redline the car to get maximum power but she refused to do so (she only revved it to like 5000rpm or so, redline was 6500 i think) So we'd make a highway pass slower than it could have been. |

Recently had an upgraded rental that turned out to be a 2022 Mustang (probably the slower 310HP trim, not totally sure). When I floored it, the front of the car lifted up, the massive engine bay made very loud noises, and it did seem to haul.
Objectively it wasn't really much faster, if at all, than the 86. But the pantomime and theatrics made it feel like a beast. The 86 seems to just get the job done without all the yelling about it. That's the straight-line comparison. The 86 is leaps and bounds better when it comes to braking and turning. |

I don't either, it is still fun to joke about
As much as I would like a bit more power, i'd really just like to cut weight out of the car but can't

It’s a “quick” car that feels slow due to it’s relatively low torque. At least that’s how mine feels. It’s quicker to 60mph than anything else I’ve owned, but it doesn’t feel like it. Everything else I’ve owned had as much torque as horsepower. Also the gearing is so different. I’ve never owned anything that could cruise easily at 80mph and still be quiet enough to visit with a passenger.

that is substantially faster than the 86. 2020 86 can go from zero to 60 mph in 6.4 seconds. It achieves the quarter-mile sprint in 14.8 seconds. a new 2022 mustang ecoboost also only costs $28k |

Slow compared to pretty much everything, especially other cars in its competitive class, cars people would cross shop with, or other sporty cars of a similar price range.
the general population might not rev out on a generic car, but the general population on this forum, I can guarantee a large portion of them are down shifting to the appropriate gear and redling every time they want to actually go "fast", although the stock car is incapable of actually going "fast" fast is a rate of acceleration, a sustained level of G-forces that gives you a feeling of unquestionable fast rates of acceleration. This car isn't fast, nor was it made or intended to be fast. It excels in a lot of areas, being fast wasn't one. It's funny when people think it is some sort of insult and get overly defensive when their car is called slow. its not an insult, its just a factual statement. Nothing wrong necessarily with a slow car, unless that is what you bought it for. Its slow in a straight line, period. Its pretty fast around a track, but since the general majority of the population doesn't track their cars they are not referring to or refencing a road course lap completion time when using the term fast. 0-60, 1/4 mile and 60-130 are the general metrics used to determine if a car is fast. The car has a very aesthetic appearance (subjectively), its light weight with great handling and steering feel/response. Its got good braking and potential with upgraded brakes to be phenomenal in that regards. Its also a good blank slate platform, with a huge aftermarket, and a ton of potential to be a autox / track monster and for relatively cheap in comparison to other platforms. The car has a lot of great traits and qualities. But do not fool yourself into thinking one of those is it being fast. |

Why does this matter? We all bought this car for roughly the same reason. Lol. I just love the driving engagement and nimbleness.

If it’s so slow why do so many love driving it? Because the fun factor is way up there compared to many cars with higher HP and torque.
If only used for DD during a commute in straight lines it does highlight its slowness. But out on mountain twisties it’s a blast. |

Thanks for all of your thoughts, I really appreciate hearing from so many owners of this car about your experiences with its accelration and speed.
I think whoever said that "fast" is relative is correct. They say our cars get about 140-160 WHP stock. Think for a second. imagine sitting in a carriage being pulled by, not 100, but 150 horses. Really imagine 150 horses, maybe start by trying to imagine being pulled by 10 horses, you are hauling ass. 150? thats an insane amount of horses to be pulled by and your just one 2,776lb carriage, thats nothing for 150 horses to pull around town at speeds that would make any honest man scared. I wholeheartedly disagree with anyone who thinks this car is slow. Y'all need to go ride a horse, get the idea in your head that is one horsepower. Now x 150... you have lost your hat I garuntee it. Im just having fun with it, hope y'all are too. Enjoy the ride and stay safe. |
