Well, in order to make a certain amount of power, you need a certain amount of fuel. And to keep your air/fuel ratio right you need a certain amount of air to go with that fuel, right? So, a certain amount of power requires the same amount of fuel and air. Doesn't matter how you get there. That's just physics. All other things being equal both motors will ingest the same amount of fuel and air to make the same amount of power.

The reason behind having a turbo for gas mileage is to allow for a smaller engine to make comparable power to a larger one (e.g. BMW moving to a turbo 4 over their straight 6 with the 328i). I don't think anyone thinks slapping a turbo on an FR-S will think it magically lead to better MPGs.

Listen up toyota.... blow this thing to 300whp, put a factory warranty around it, some HID lights, and I.ll write a check for $35k. Deal?
There, fixed that for you.

That may be a bit ambitious.

But I certainly appreciate your optimism here.

I'm interested in the KERS system where you could get some extra boost when you need it but the lawyers would never allow it. Unintended acceleration claims would go through the roof because people would hit the wrong button lol.

Closer to 3.5 years according to what Tada-san a long time ago regarding the years until the next generation. Which is typical for sport cars, from what I have seen. For example, Mazda and Subaru both use 7 years for their sports cars.

Yes and the cars that get good fuel economy with a turbo are all using direct injection too.

50hp

These motors are super efficient. 100hp per liter. It is quite difficult to get much beyond that w.o forced induction. Certainly tuning, intake and exhaust is not going to make 20hp.

Engine internals? Like what? More compression? not likely. Cams? Ok, sure. We can get more peak hp with different cams and tuning. The result would be something you would not want to drive on the street.

No. Forced induction is it. Everything else is chipping at the edges.
Considering Honda could get 240 hp out of a NA 2.2 liter engine 12 years ago it would be perfectly reasonable to think that 240-250 hp out of this engine with the current technology would be possible.

it also took them twice the cam profiles, 800 rpm and almost 10k$ more all the while they didnt have to deal with the emissions regulations we see today. im not so sure its reasonable to expect a car of the scions caliber to break the hp/liter record for na production vehicles.

Very solid and valid point.

Please retread in context. I was referring to adding 50 bhp with bolt.ons or aftermarket internals. Not so easy or simple for a streetable car. Or cheap.

Now engineered from the factory? I could see that as well.

Just for the hell of it I checked the specs for the 458 Ferrari which produces 125 hp per liter, so it possible to get 250 hp out our 2 liter engine, theoretically. The reasonableness, cost wise, is probably prohibitive.

The last time I looked at a new S2000 in 2008 they were offered at $26k, $6k off sticker.

Hardly, the FA20 is already producing 100hp/Liter, It wont produce the same numbers as a bigger engine.

i bet that Basic bolt on and a e85 tune on a FA20 will only yeild max at 220whp. when i say basic, i think headers, Full Exhaust, intake and tune.
