Well, in order to make a certain amount of power, you need a certain amount of fuel. And to keep your air/fuel ratio right you need a certain amount of air to go with that fuel, right? So, a certain amount of power requires the same amount of fuel and air. Doesn't matter how you get there. That's just physics. All other things being equal both motors will ingest the same amount of fuel and air to make the same amount of power.

The reason behind having a turbo for gas mileage is to allow for a smaller engine to make comparable power to a larger one (e.g. BMW moving to a turbo 4 over their straight 6 with the 328i). I don't think anyone thinks slapping a turbo on an FR-S will think it magically lead to better MPGs.

I'm interested in the KERS system where you could get some extra boost when you need it but the lawyers would never allow it. Unintended acceleration claims would go through the roof because people would hit the wrong button lol.

it also took them twice the cam profiles, 800 rpm and almost 10k$ more all the while they didnt have to deal with the emissions regulations we see today. im not so sure its reasonable to expect a car of the scions caliber to break the hp/liter record for na production vehicles.

Please retread in context. I was referring to adding 50 bhp with bolt.ons or aftermarket internals. Not so easy or simple for a streetable car. Or cheap. Now engineered from the factory? I could see that as well. |
