I'm not a mac guy so I'm not 100% certain, but if it's a new Mac then it uses the same hardware as a PC so you should be able to find an adapter.

Quick request for help

So my PC finally bit the bucket and mobo started smoking...why i do not know....but anywho..im on my wifes netbook and i found some junked PC parts that i put together for free. This will serve until i buy a rig..

AMD Sempron 3000+ 1800mhz
MS-7142 v.1 Mother Board
1x 512mb DDR400/PC3200 DualChannel Ram
1x 1G DDR333/PC2700 DualChannel Ram
ATI Raedon 9200 128mb AGP graphics card

PC starts up ok, i saw on the bios that all the clocking features are unlocked so i figured id get some advice on overclocking this POS a bit. AKA HELP!

It really depends on what's causing the error. If it's data corruption you're probably not going to be able to restore them. Not sure which player you use, try VLC player. VLC will play just about every format, so that will eliminate all the simple problems. Might not hurt to google whatever the error code says.

Heh, I used to ask my customers if they knew what made their computer run, and when they said no I told them they run on smoke. They'd look at me like I was crazy and ask "Smoke, really?" to which I'd answer, "Well, have you ever seen one work after the smoke gets out?"

Sorry bout the old box WoW. I wouldn't even bother OCing that Sempron even if you could, just keep on doin' what you can til you get the new one.

4agze, are you getting an error while it's transferring the file, or will it just not play? If it won't play, grab VLC here like 82mm said. If that doesn't work, unfortunately they may just be lost.

so someone told me to wait till next summer to build a 3D rendering workhorse PC, and get a Core i7 extreme 9xxX when the prices of those LGA1155 Socket H or LGA1366 Socket B processors and motherboards drop because they are getting phase out to make way for the new Intel Sandy Bridge Gesha processors (Socket R/ LGA 2100).

Im pretty certain i don't need the next years 8core/16thread core processor. But if i can get my hands on a cheap Core I7 extreme, that would be worlds better than me buying/building a rig now, and then 8-10 months later find out that for the same price i could have a rig 3-4times the processing power.

does that seem correct? or is it worth it?

Eh waiting doesn't do you that much good. Depreciation is not really as fast as people think it is. There is no way the hexacore/octacore processors will make the quad prices drop, because they are all on the same architecture, and occupy different market segments. They will simply sit at a higher price above what currently is offered. Nehalem processors are still going strong in the used market, so don't expect Sandy Bridge processors to be going down anytime soon.

Now if you want to wait till Ivy Bridge...well happy waiting lol.

urg i dont even want to know when the new Ivy Bridge Processors will be available in my price range. That seems like years ahead! I remember when the first gen Core i7 appeared on the market for $999...fuck that shit...im sure its going to be the same for the ivy bridge.

I don't really wait for new parts to come out... waste of time IMO. If you keep waiting for the latest and greatest parts you'll be waiting forever because they just keep getting better and better

Upgrade now and then upgrade in the future again if it turns out you need to. Chances are the current processors are enough for your intended purpose anyway

Sometimes it is appropriate to wait, but I'd say now isn't one of them. When there is a MAJOR architectural change such as the Core 2 Duo release, that is worth waiting I'd say up to 12 months if you already have a computer that is competent, if not, 3 months max. It's also good to remember that like I said, depreciation is exaggerated. Prices do not always fall simply because new stuff is coming along. Sometimes the new stuff will keep the price of the old stuff at a relatively high level for longer, if the old stuff occupies the correct performance/price segment.

Right now, there is literally nothing to wait for. You cannot get more than 4 cores (intel) within a reasonable budget in the near future. Same with video cards really, it's a shame but the next gen graphics just keep getting delayed more and more...

Intel processors don't come down in price THAT much. Look at the Core2Duo E8400, it's come down in price $15 since the time I was building a rig about 2 years ago. I don't see the 990X coming down from it's $1000 price tag to anything even remotely affordable even when the next EE's come out.

If you want 990X performance for 1/3 the price, get the 2600K and overclock it to 4.3GHz or more. You will have damn near the same processing power NOW instead of 9 months from now.

What they said. There is no point in waiting 12 months if you need a computer now or ASAP.
