I can think of lots of two door cars though that are perfectly fine family cars (and a ton of trucks for that matter).

Back in the day, there were lots of families that bought the car they could afford, regardless of its convenience. In fact, my family once took a 500 mile trip in a 60's VW Bug with two adult women, a 14 year old, a 12 year old, a 9 year old, an infant and a German Shepard. Of course we didn't have to worry about silly safety rules then!

Well, that I understand...

All of my other cars had some practical requirement thus the 4 doors (and most of them were hatches/wagons). I chose the FR-S over the IS350 because I wanted cheap, cheerful, obnoxious fun. For as many times as I've crammed my kid in the back of the FR-S (because I wanted to play with my toy rather than the Rav), a 4 door would be a lot easier to live with... especially since the passenger seat doesn't lock in the forward position when I'm trying to buckle her in. Basically, I deliberately selected a vehicle that isn't ideal from a practical standpoint when I could have easily bought a WRX or GTI instead. I've had Imprezas and a 4 door GTI before and I wanted RWD and light weight since we already had the family mobile covered. That makes it a toy to me.

My grandparents had a beetle with 7 kids. It was because that was all they could afford. Funny enough, if I had an old beetle now, I would consider it a toy due to the terrible safety and basically being a terrible car to drive on a daily basis. Things change with time and toy can have many definitions.

Yeah we had a 67 Olds F85 HD and a 72 Vega, guess which one got used most often as the family car. 8mpg vs. ~30 ... Wasn't necessarily the most comfortable road trip vehicle even though my brother and I were pretty small kids.

Just read an article that the BRZ suffered a 10% sales loss in 2014 over 2013.
The article was only covering Subaru and how their overall sales were up but the BRZ and Forrester were the only models that saw sales declines.

Pretty common trend among sports cars/coupes.

Seasonal sale numbers are down in New England. Makes some sense, since RWD vehicles don't sell particularly well in the winter here.

Subaru of New England (SNE), didn't actually open up ordering of 2015's till the end of October. Three 2015's were listed as "in transit" w/ a stock number "SOLD", so those must have been customer orders and not dealer allocation. Looks like SNE is down to one incoming now [1].

Heuberger has a bunch of 14's left, and only one 15 premium. They sold their series.blue's, but must be holding off on the 2015's till they sell off their existing stock of 14's.

Any one who wanted a BRZ must have already bought one, and it appears that SOA and SNE have adjusted their shipments to snowy regions in response to slowing sales.

TL,DR: Sales of Brz's are slowing, especially in snowy areas.

Need to consider the availability of used ones in 2014 as well. They would certainly have some impact since there were very few used around in 13.

Agree. The cars by nature are niche products with a specific target audience.
The biggest portion of people that want one will buy the car in the first couple of years of production after that sales will decline until there is some kind of major update/refresh/redesign.

Sports coupes are definitely "want" and not "need" which is why it hard to sustain sales as well as other models.

Plus as Tcoat mentions there are plenty of used ones available now. If you are going to buy a car to mod and/or to run hard on a road or track then it makes sense to grab a used one. That way you do not have to worry about voided warranty and the money saved can be used for the mods or the consumables if you are tracking.

Yep, I'm a good example of that. I rarely buy new (of my last 6 cars, two were new, an '05 Mustang and a '13 FR-S). I particularly don't buy new if there has not been a significant change in the car in the last few model years from the year I am purchasing in. You'll note both of the ones above are first year models.

If I were in the market in 2014 (which means a '13 was as much as 24 months old) I would have bought used rather than new.

It's tough though, because like the Evo/Sti this car was made with the intention of being driven hard. The longer you wait to buy used, the longer it will take to find a stock, clean car.

Since Spacewilly seems to have left us long ago, I will add the latest numbers to show how the twinds are doing these day. I am always interested in the total sales numbers because I now see twins everywhere.
