This is fun. Furnace started acting up last week. Got someone out finally Friday, and he's stumped. Probably the gas valve needs to be replaced since it also controls the igniter, which is what sometimes chooses to not work. And "its an Armstrong, cheap contractor stuff" so parts aren't available and they have to research...

As of yesterday evening, it seems it is now not working 100%. It hit 6° last night outside. So I'm doing what you should not and manually lighting, because I don't even have a quote yet...

A hot bath?

I occurs to me, the Hums have adult relatives relatively nearby with their own house, and probably, a bath or two with an unbroken caloric converter.

Speaking of boilers... I took the time to clean my Rancilio Silva (w/PID ) espresso machine this weekend.

1 table spoon of citric acid in the water reservoir ran through. Then two reservoir's full of water flushed through the system. Also put a plug in the portafilter to create pressure to back flush the purge line with a pinch of citric acid. (the plug comes with the machine - standard procedure for cleaning)

Once I got this machine, I NEVER buy espresso drinks anywhere anymore. I bet it actually has saved me money in the long run. $3 to $4 coffee drinks add up quickly! (especially when My wife and I would buy two of them!)

Armstrong is the "low end" division of Lennox, seems odd that parts aren't available.

Well, technically it's an AirEase. Which is the low end of Armstrong? I have no idea how this stuff works. The part is made by Honeywell. I'm a bit baffled myself. "Low end" is, as I understand it, simply in the name being less well known. We'll see.

I signed up for their service plan this year (it's January, and I know something in the A/C is making a horrid noise outside, and they charge to come to your house otherwise... plus 15% off hardware) so however many trips it takes I guess. As long as I can keep manually lighting, I suppose. We've used the service folks before as have people we know, so I'm reasonably confident they're not a problem. Hopefully...

In a pinch we can move downstairs, it's a 2 furnace house. Maybe some fans to try to move air upstairs to avoid freezing. But I really don't want to do that.
It's only money in the end, right? Already looking forward to paying a ton more income tax this year... should be interesting to see if we've budgeted adequately for it all. edit: just got the call, they want $1300 and it's only a "probably" fix...
