@Dadhawk, agreed, we do have different definitions of toys lol. For me a toy is anything that isn't practical for your life and where you live.

For me, if it snows, I don't plan on driving the car. And while my kids may fit into the car(2), I only bought the car cause one should have his license in the next month. Plus, I bought the car to have fun while driving around. I appreciate it getting good gas mileage, but if it only maxed out at 25, that wouldn't have stopped my purchase lol.

I think the main problem is that for the main group they are trying to appeal to, the car is practical for half of them. When someone has kids it really hinders being able to buy the equivalent of a 2 seater(my seat goes all the way to the rear seat).

Love the car, but the tC unfortunately is more of a practical DD and is probably why the car sells so well.

I originally went into the dealership to look at TCs after seeing my first one in the wild (Canada eh) and tend to agree it would be much more practical for a family. Still far from the most practical but yes more so (see mini vans and SUVs for most practical)
For me the FRS is as practical a car as I could ask for and it suits my needs perfectly. No problems in the snow, only need one seat much les two and the mileage is pretty much is self explanatory.
This car was never targeted at the family segment in the first place so I don't think they are missing "half of them".
Who they are missing, is the "need more power" segment that would truly make this a "toy" vehicle. In the real world (not Forumland) there are probably just not enough of them to support the cost of the production upgrades some want.
I don't think they could lower the price or make a cheaper version as they are probably playing it pretty close already.

Actually if you combine sales of the BRZ and FRS they have outsold the TC rather handily. I only went back to 2013 though.

The section of quote is actually from Utahsleeper not me but I am not surprised by the numbers at all.
Like I said in my part, I went to look at TCs after seeing my first one ever in July of 2014!
I hated my Lancer and was looking for a nice sporty coupe and the TC I saw (probably some special edition) looked different then some of the same old, same old.
I had read about the FRS but had never really considered one until I walked into that showroom and beams of light from the heavens shone down upon some bright orange glory!

I think we may be closer to saying the same thing then you think.

Taken at face value your definition makes pretty much every car a "toy" for someone. I suppose that is very well true.

Extreme example, a family of 7 with two large dogs may need a Suburban to get around together probably has no need to be buying a Prius, because it is a toy, unless there is another need it meets. (Dad commutes 80 miles a day solo, buys a Prius, or an FR-S for that matter, as a more practical solution, so its not really a toy).

So, in the end, like most all things automotive, its situational.

Hah! That's how I ended up with my MK1 MR2. Went in to take delivery on a Toyota truck, saw the MR2 being offloaded from the carrier, same beams from heaven, and it went home with me.

Sorry, I should have been more specific. I'm looking for a breakdown of the Monograms produced. Colors and Transmissions.

For example, I think it would be interesting to know how many Hot Lava, manual Monograms were made. I'm guessing the number has to be lower than 200.

Good! I thought you had lost it for a second there.
I would be interested as well really.
I read someplace that Lava is only 5% of regular production and would guess that it would be similar.
The Lava was not even available in a Monogram in Canada.

Hmm, I think I remember also hearing that manual transmissions would only be offered with 25% of the Monograms made. If both of those statistics are true that would mean that there are less than 50 manual transmissions Hot Lava cars on the road.

If those numbers are correct that means there are about 3 Monogram MT Lavas!

I consider the FR-S a toy. The number of doors pretty much makes it a toy because most normal people would buy a 4 door if they have a kid. I've owned 5 4doors prior to my FR-S and zero 2 doors. I sacrificed my normal practicality for fun. That means toy for me.

My daughter loves it, too. Also means toy.

I was mostly thinking age range they are missing. I assume they were aiming for the 20 to 40 range and in that range, alot of people have kids or are planning for them.

Also, the whole more power thing, Toyota unfortunately learned that doesn't work well. Look at the demise of the Celica and Supra. While both were great cars, they priced out the people that wanted them by adding alot of features people said they wanted........or thats my opinion anyway since I dont know for sure lol.
