Let me lay out a scenario for you.

It's 10pm. You're at a 4-way intersection, and you pull into the far left lane. You're the only vehicle there. Your light is red. You wait 2 minutes. A car approaches on the opposite direction and is green lit. Still waiting. Traffic to your right pulls up. They get a green light. Still waiting. It's now 6 minutes of waiting. You get a green light.

2nd scenario.

You are with a large group of cars at a main street approaching a light. The light is red. Just as you pull up to the red, the car on the left of the 4-way intersection that pulled up after you, just got the green light.

Doesn't it make more sense to have that car wait 20-30 seconds with the large group of cars getting the green first? Instead of having them all brake and sit in idle just for that one car to pass?

There's no "Traffic pattern" for that really. Just Stop Light Idiocy.
There is a thing called traffic engineering for transportation (not network traffic) where the *traffic engineer* should design the traffic pattern and stop light duration and special cases to ensure maximum fluidity of the flow. On most of the main road, if you time your drive properly (or luckily I should say), you should be able to drive nicely along the way with all the green lights.

Then there is the classic traffic light pattern between a main road and a side road, where during the off hours the side road will always be red until there are cars park on it and then it will turn green after a period of time. I wonder if such system is installed in your area.

From your scenario 1, it seems that there is no differentiation between both directions of roads. Since you are turning left, you have to wait for a cycle until the next turn.

Scenario 2: I would say that is just bad timing. I have/had that experience myself so I feel for you. However, I would think that is just because we (the cars surroundings and myself) are just in a bad timing for that traffic pattern at that particular light. Nothing too much to worry about.

On the other hand, suppose if there are sensors installed on all four corners of the traffic light that can sense the amount of cars and make decision on its own to turn green or red on any direction, that would mean total chaos in the traffic!! For example, if there are five cars that got green lights at this intersection and move to the next intersection, where they got stopped because there is a random 10 cars entourage on the other direction. Then there are more cars coming in from behind because on the previous intersection the traffic is heavy at this direction. Eventually there will be a jam between these two intersections because the traffic lights do not act accordingly.

So in summary, if you think the traffic lights should become more intelligent, check your local government or representative to see if they can improve it. Waiting at an intersection for 6 minutes really sound silly, but that maybe the case depends on how the traffic is shaped.

In my city, they recently switched over the standard green light/red light cycle for left turns with a flashing yellow, meaning turn at your own discretion. It's almost always flashing yellow for maximum flow, though there are times that it's red just because it would be idiotic to turn left. This is always something you could suggest to your city...

Ummm...I haven't done one of those photo booth things since I was in High School. People still do those things on first dates?

My first dates usually consist of drinking at the bar to see if we have any rapport. And if she's under 21 I'll take her to one of my favorite spots that involves a 6 shooter or something that will excite her senses.

Here's a truly random thought:

Why is that when I go ahead and try to wash dishes I seem to find myself always going to the bathroom and taking a leak?

Now if that ain't random, I don't know what is.

I think Scion is worried about the FR-S stealing the tC's thunder. I'm watching top gear and even though the show is "brought to you by" the FR-S, I've seen a commercial for the tC every commercial break, and not a single FR-S commercial. It's also a tC commercial I haven't seen before.

Well, today was pretty unfortunate, I couldn't buy a parking permit because despite them telling me before that I could present evidence that I had changed the registration on my car, a physical copy of the registration card with appropriate address is required

So, I just parked 2 hours at a time, moving my car around. Parking is f***ing hard to find... [sarcasm]Luckily, I only had to move my car 5 times today [\sarcasm] 6pm-9am non-enforced parking is such a godsend.

On a side note though, it seems like whenever I walk to my car (to move it..) everyone walking by on the street is staring at it making some comment e.g. "man that car is fuckin tiny".

i don't even know if they still have those photo booths. lol.

and i don't drink very much, so going out drinking would be pointless. especially since i'm a featherweight. doesn't take very much to make me drunk, and i get very VERY friendly when i drink. not a good idea for first dates
