Toyo tire in first? Maybe someone can fill us in on what happened this week. Andrew P needs to update his build thread now as I am really interested. :P I noticed stock battery in place in one of the pictures I saw though in his build he was using a very small one. Seeing the results makes me glad I got the KW's.

Maybe the weather and course design gave the Toyos a better advantage? I do agree, though, Andrew Pallotta should update his build thread.

Looking at street tire classes; 1st-16th in STS out of 20 all Toyo.
1st-8th STC Toyo. But no good results in STU, STR, STF, RTR, RTF, RTA. They offer a 275/40/17 in the Toyo, one can dream.

Yeah the Toyo R1Rs are a lot better on the lighter STC and STS cars and like cooler weather. They're also pretty darn good in the wet. We ran them on my friend's Super Stock Lotus Elise when it was too wet for Hoosiers and they were great.

For heavier cars in STR, STX, and STU, they're not so good and fall off when hot. A driver in my local club tried 245/35/17 R1Rs on his STX WRX last year and was solid in the spring and fall, but struggled in the summer. The same driver went to ZIIs and has been more consistent this year.

I've often wondered how the Toyos would work on the BRZ/FR-S in RTR and STX for cool/wet weather.

Very interesting. Looks like it's mid-80's to 90 in Lincoln. And one of the courses is a long 70+ sec course - and the RX-8 isn't particularly light. Also looks like the RX-8 coned away a very fast run on Day 1 on the 3rd run - so apparently heat wasn't an issue...

I'm with you on that, the RX-8 (Jeff Hurst) winning on Toyos was a little surprising to me, but STX did run first group. Was it already 85-90 degrees at 9:00 AM there? In addition, Jeff didn't have a co-driver and there was a good amount of time between runs, so maybe that was the ticket?

Anyway, I was mostly just sharing info from observations and conversations I've had to explain why people don't run Toyos more often in STR/STU/STX/RT*. I've co-driven with Michael Kuhn (Finished 10th in STX on Rivals) before and he has run all the hot street tires at one time or another on various surfaces. There were rare times when the Toyos worked well for him, but he preferred the RS3 and Rivals on his RX-8. He mostly cited heat being the downfall of the Toyos for him. Maybe he needs to rethink that since Jeff's RX-8 got first and he was in 10th! Or maybe Jeff Hurst is just awesome and would have run well on any of the top street tires!

The soft compound of the R1R is gone once the tread is approximately 3 mm deep, which may also be a reason why many people steer away from it.

Yeah there are certain R1Rs which are said to be a different compound than the rest. The small 195 ones everyone runs in STC and STS are the good compound.

There is supposedly a size or two in the 17" sizes which are also good but like said they wear out of the "good stuff" quickly.

All of the R1Rs are banned next year as their treadwear rating is 140 and it needs to be 200. Unless they come out with a revised TW like Hankook did on the RS3.

Indeed. Hurst is definitely fast - he was consistently ahead of the Simmons/Ridgick BRZ locally and he barely lost the NJ Pro to Pallotta. But I think this is the first time I've seen him on Toyos - I wasn't at the tours but I thought he had been running Rivals most of the year. If this was more of a gamble... he must feel like the smartest man alive right now...

I wonder if the Toyos were the only thing he brought or did he bring Rivals too? Perhaps he had both and intended to use the Toyos as a rain tire (since we know the Rivals aren't the best in rain), but then decided to gamble on them in the dry? If so, hats off to him on making that call.

Thread is TL,DR. I want to take the FRS to Qualcomm on Sept 22 to try my hand at AutoX. I bought the FRS with the TRD Intake, TRD Exhaust.

Cosmetic mods: Tail lights, Bumper light, Side markers, Hood struts, Shark fin antenna. What class would this FRS be in and is there anything else that I need to bring besides drivers license, car, helmet, and money? TIA

Heres the skinny...Jeff Hurst tested some 235 Toyos on the practice course... the were shaved..and have a similar compound to the pixie dust 195 Toyo's that have become so popular in STC, STS... and other classes.. Jeff was about 4 to 5/10ths faster on toyos.. He then 'overnited' a set to run for nats..he ran the ones he tested on Thurs... then used the Fresh set today... the have enough goodie in the tire to last about 15-20 runs... He was close enough to Palotta on the first day... .3/10ths out to use the brand new stickers today to win by 2/10ths... so he made up .5 sec to take the win.. Interesting tidbit... Jordon Towns..STXL champion "rented the Toyos" for her win in STXL for $50 from Jeff.. Interesting strategy...for sure.. but it seemed to pay off.. My Lady driver was the fastest 86 in STXL and ended up 4th...

The TRD intake would put him in STX. It's not the drop in filter it replaces the stock air box.

Not surprised on the 235 Toyo thing, of course it is moot for next year. Reminds me of the year Braun changed tires every run on a SS Elise...
